Let (R4,ta,hab,∇~)(\mathbb R^4,t_a,h^{ab},\widetilde{\nabla})(R4,ta,hab,∇) be a classical spacetime satisfying the Trautman–Malament curvature conditions (1)–(3) for a smooth mass density ρ\rhoρ. Then there exists a smooth gravitational potential φ\varphiφ such that the gauge-transformed connection

∇=(∇~, tbtc∇~aφ)\nabla=(\widetilde{\nabla},\,t_b t_c\widetilde{\nabla}^a\varphi)∇=(∇,tbtc∇aφ)

(i.e. Γabc=Γ~abc−tbtc∇aφ\Gamma^a{}_{bc}=\widetilde{\Gamma}^a{}_{bc}-t_b t_c\nabla^a\varphiΓabc=Γabc−tbtc∇aφ) is flat and compatible, and (∇,φ)(\nabla,\varphi)(∇,φ) satisfies Poisson's equation ∇a∇aφ=4πρ\nabla^a\nabla_a\varphi=4\pi\rho∇a∇aφ=4πρ.

In the formalization, ∇\nabla∇ is written gaugeΓ Γt φ. This is the existence/Poincaré-lemma content of Weatherall Prop. 2.2 / Malament Prop. 4.2.5; together with the identity geomΓ(gaugeΓ(Γ~,φ),φ)=Γ~\mathrm{geom}\Gamma(\mathrm{gauge}\Gamma(\widetilde{\Gamma},\varphi),\varphi)=\widetilde{\Gamma}geomΓ(gaugeΓ(Γ,φ),φ)=Γ it yields Trautman recovery.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
