Let RRR be a relation on Z\mathbb{Z}Z satisfying (∗)(\ast)(∗), with a least element zzz (zRyz\mathrel{R}yzRy for all y≠zy\neq zy=z). Let PPP be a safe list containing zzz. Then no element MMM appearing after zzz in PPP can be the maximum or the minimum of PPP:

z∈P, SafeR(P), posP(z)<posP(M), M=max⁡P or M=min⁡P  ⟹  ⊥.z\in P,\ \mathrm{Safe}_R(P),\ \mathrm{pos}_P(z)<\mathrm{pos}_P(M),\ M=\max P \text{ or } M=\min P \implies \bot.z∈P, SafeR(P), posP(z)<posP(M), M=maxP or M=minP⟹⊥.

This is the obstruction to running Ho's method on Z\mathbb{Z}Z with a completion order that has a least element.

Formalization Note compLt R P x y holds when both lie in P with x at a smaller index, or x ∈ P and y ∉ P, or neither lies in P and R x y. Safe R P says there are no a and r ≠ 0 with compLt R P a (a+r), compLt R P (a+r) (a+2r) and compLt R P (a+2r) (a+3r).

P.idxOf is the index of the first occurrence in the list.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
