Consider a stochastic program with fixed recourse whose random element ξ\xiξ, with law a probability measure μ\muμ, satisfies the weak covariance condition (Definition 2.2), and whose recourse matrix WWW has full row rank (the paper's standing assumption, p. 312). Let Z(x)=cˉx+Q(x)Z(x)=\bar cx+\mathcal Q(x)Z(x)=cˉx+Q(x) and K=K1∩K2K=K_1\cap K_2K=K1∩K2 be as in the model. Suppose ZZZ is bounded on KKK, i.e. Z(x)>−∞Z(x)>-\inftyZ(x)>−∞ for every x∈Kx\in Kx∈K. Then ZZZ is finite on KKK and satisfies a Lipschitz condition there: there is a constant Bˉ\bar BBˉ such that

∣Z(x)−Z(x0)∣≤Bˉ ∥x−x0∥for all x,x0∈K,|Z(x)-Z(x^0)|\le\bar B\,\|x-x^0\|\qquad\text{for all }x,x^0\in K,∣Z(x)−Z(x0)∣≤Bˉ∥x−x0∥for all x,x0∈K,

where ∥⋅∥\|\cdot\|∥⋅∥ is the Euclidean norm of Rn\mathbb R^nRn.

Together with Theorem 7.6 this shows that, whenever the deterministic equivalent program is not identically −∞-\infty−∞, its objective is a finite, convex, Lipschitz function on the feasible region; this is the regularity used for the stability result, Theorem 8.11.

Formalization Note The paper writes "Z(x)Z(x)Z(x) is bounded on KKK". By Theorem 7.6, ZZZ is either finite or identically −∞-\infty−∞ on KKK, and the proof opens with "if Q(x)>−∞\mathcal Q(x)>-\inftyQ(x)>−∞ on K2K_2K2"; the hypothesis is therefore read as Z>−∞Z>-\inftyZ>−∞ on KKK, which is weaker than a two-sided bound ∣Z∣≤M|Z|\le M∣Z∣≤M and makes the theorem stronger. Finiteness on KKK is part of the conclusion, so that toReal is exact. The constant Bˉ\bar BBˉ may depend on the instance. The Euclidean norm is written as ∑i(xi−xi0)2\sqrt{\sum_i (x_i-x^0_i)^2}∑i(xi−xi0)2.

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
