Let m≥1m\ge 1m≥1 be an integer and α∈C\alpha\in\mathbb Cα∈C with α≠αˉ\alpha\ne\bar\alphaα=αˉ (that is, α\alphaα is not real), and let hα(t)=−t (tm+1) (αtm+αˉ)∈C[t]h_\alpha(t)=-t\,(t^m+1)\,(\alpha t^m+\bar\alpha)\in\mathbb C[t]hα(t)=−t(tm+1)(αtm+αˉ)∈C[t]. Let Lα=C(t)[W]/(W2−hα(t))L_\alpha=\mathbb C(t)[W]/(W^2-h_\alpha(t))Lα=C(t)[W]/(W2−hα(t)). For a point ppp of the Riemann sphere C∪{∞}\mathbb C\cup\{\infty\}C∪{∞}, viewed as the ttt-line, a place of LαL_\alphaLα over ppp is a valuation subring O≠Lα\mathcal O\ne L_\alphaO=Lα of LαL_\alphaLα containing C\mathbb CC such that t−c∈Ot-c\in\mathcal Ot−c∈O and (t−c)−1∉O(t-c)^{-1}\notin\mathcal O(t−c)−1∈/O if p=c∈Cp=c\in\mathbb Cp=c∈C, and such that t∉Ot\notin\mathcal Ot∈/O if p=∞p=\inftyp=∞. Call ppp a branch point if fewer than two places of LαL_\alphaLα lie over ppp. Then:

  1. the set of branch points is {∞}∪{c∈C: hα(c)=0}\{\infty\}\cup\{c\in\mathbb C:\ h_\alpha(c)=0\}{∞}∪{c∈C: hα(c)=0};
  2. there are exactly 2m+22m+22m+2 branch points;
  3. ∞\infty∞ is a branch point;
  4. 000 is a branch point;
  5. for every c∈Cc\in\mathbb Cc∈C with hα(c)≠0h_\alpha(c)\ne0hα(c)=0, exactly two places of LαL_\alphaLα lie over ccc.

In short,

{branch points}={∞}∪{c∈C: hα(c)=0},∣{branch points}∣=2m+2.\{\text{branch points}\}=\{\infty\}\cup\{c\in\mathbb C:\ h_\alpha(c)=0\},\qquad\big|\{\text{branch points}\}\big|=2m+2.{branch points}={∞}∪{c∈C: hα(c)=0},{branch points}=2m+2.

This is the count of branch points of the double cover (7) in the proof of Lemma 4: exactly 2m+22m+22m+2 of them, including 000 and ∞\infty∞. A branch point is defined here by its fibre (one place over the point instead of two); ramification indices are not part of the statement.

Formalization Note: the ttt-line is OnePoint ℂ, and the places over ppp are counted with Set.ncard (which gives 000 for an infinite set); m>0m>0m>0 and α≠αˉ\alpha\ne\bar\alphaα=αˉ are Fact instances.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
