Let EEE be a complex Hilbert space with a Hilbert basis (bj)j∈J(b_j)_{j\in J}(bj)j∈J, and let (vi)i∈I(v_i)_{i\in I}(vi)i∈I be a family in EEE with ∑i∥vi∥2<∞\sum_i\|v_i\|^2<\infty∑i∥vi∥2<∞. Put ρv=∑i∣vi⟩⟨vi∣\rho_v=\sum_i|v_i\rangle\langle v_i|ρv=∑i∣vi⟩⟨vi∣, a positive trace-class operator. Then for every bounded operator ZZZ on EEE the series below converges unconditionally and

∑j∈J⟨bj,  Zρv bj⟩=∑i∈I⟨vi, Zvi⟩.\sum_{j\in J}\bigl\langle b_j,\;Z\rho_v\,b_j\bigr\rangle=\sum_{i\in I}\langle v_i,\,Zv_i\rangle .j∈J∑⟨bj,Zρvbj⟩=i∈I∑⟨vi,Zvi⟩.

In words, the trace of ZρvZ\rho_vZρv computed in an arbitrary orthonormal basis equals the ensemble expectation of ZZZ. This is what allows expectations Tr⁡ρZ\operatorname{Tr}\rho ZTrρZ to be evaluated in whichever basis is convenient, e.g. the eigenbasis of a reference state.

Formalization Note The left side is stated as HasSum over JJJ with value expectation v Z =∑i⟨vi,Zvi⟩=\sum_i\langle v_i,Zv_i\rangle=∑i⟨vi,Zvi⟩ (a tsum); ρv\rho_vρv is operator v.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
