Let 0<β<10<\beta<10<β<1, let MMM be a finite deterministic stationary Markov decision process with nnn states and initial state s0s_0s0, and let Jβ∗(s0)=inf⁡δ∑t≥0βtc(st,δ(st,t))J^*_\beta(s_0)=\inf_\delta\sum_{t\ge0}\beta^tc(s_t,\delta(s_t,t))Jβ∗(s0)=infδ∑t≥0βtc(st,δ(st,t)) be its optimal discounted cost, the infimum over all policies δ(s,t)\delta(s,t)δ(s,t). Then:

  1. Jβ∗(s0)J^*_\beta(s_0)Jβ∗(s0) is the least discounted cost of a sigma from s0s_0s0, and some sigma attains it;
  2. with Bj=A⊗βA⊗⋯⊗βj−1AB_j=A\otimes\beta A\otimes\cdots\otimes\beta^{j-1}ABj=A⊗βA⊗⋯⊗βj−1A (B0B_0B0 the min-plus identity),
Jβ∗(s0)=min⁡{λ+βkμ1−βl  :  u∈S, 0≤k≤n, 1≤l≤n, λ=(Bk)s0u<∞, μ=(Bl)uu<∞},J^*_\beta(s_0)=\min\Bigl\{\lambda+\frac{\beta^{k}\mu}{1-\beta^{l}}\;:\;u\in S,\ 0\le k\le n,\ 1\le l\le n,\ \lambda=(B_k)_{s_0u}<\infty,\ \mu=(B_l)_{uu}<\infty\Bigr\},Jβ∗(s0)=min{λ+1−βlβkμ:u∈S, 0≤k≤n, 1≤l≤n, λ=(Bk)s0u<∞, μ=(Bl)uu<∞},

the minimum being attained.

This is the mathematical content of Theorem 4 of the paper ("the infinite-horizon, discounted deterministic problem is in NC"): the optimum is a minimum of polynomially many closed-form expressions in the entries of the matrix products BjB_jBj, each of which can be computed in parallel.

Formalization Note The parallel-complexity claim (membership in NC, processor and time bounds) is not formalized. The paper prints the expression as λ+βk+1μ/(1+βl)\lambda+\beta^{k+1}\mu/(1+\beta^l)λ+βk+1μ/(1+βl); with λ=(Bk)u0u\lambda=(B_k)_{u_0u}λ=(Bk)u0u covering times 0,…,k−10,\dots,k-10,…,k−1 the cycle starts at time kkk, so we state the corrected λ+βkμ/(1−βl)\lambda+\beta^k\mu/(1-\beta^l)λ+βkμ/(1−βl), and we exclude l=0l=0l=0, for which 1−β0=01-\beta^0=01−β0=0. (One node with a loop of cost 111 has optimum 1/(1−β)1/(1-\beta)1/(1−β), which the printed expression does not produce.) The paper's "k,l=0,1,…,nk,l=0,1,\dots,nk,l=0,1,…,n" uses B0B_0B0, which we take to be the min-plus identity. The optimum is over all time-dependent policies δ(s,t)\delta(s,t)δ(s,t), not over stationary ones, so the first part includes the existence of a stationary optimal policy.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
