Let g:Rn→Rg:\mathbb R^n\to\mathbb Rg:Rn→R be twice continuously differentiable and strongly convex with constant m>0m>0m>0, with ∇g\nabla g∇g and ∇2g\nabla^2 g∇2g Lipschitz continuous with constants L1L_1L1 and L2L_2L2. Let hhh be a proper closed convex function with domain DDD and x⋆x^\starx⋆ an optimal solution of min⁡f=g+h\min f=g+hminf=g+h. Fix α∈(0,12)\alpha\in(0,\tfrac12)α∈(0,21), β∈(0,1)\beta\in(0,1)β∈(0,1) and M≥mM\ge mM≥m, and let (xk,Hk,Δxk,tk)(x_k,H_k,\Delta x_k,t_k)(xk,Hk,Δxk,tk) be a run of Algorithm 1 such that

  1. mI⪯Hk⪯MImI\preceq H_k\preceq MImI⪯Hk⪯MI for every kkk, and
  2. {Hk}\{H_k\}{Hk} satisfies the Dennis–Moré criterion (3.2): ∥(Hk−∇2g(x⋆))(xk+1−xk)∥/∥xk+1−xk∥→0\|(H_k-\nabla^2 g(x^\star))(x_{k+1}-x_k)\|/\|x_{k+1}-x_k\|\to0∥(Hk−∇2g(x⋆))(xk+1−xk)∥/∥xk+1−xk∥→0.

Then, after sufficiently many iterations, the unit step satisfies the sufficient descent condition (2.19):

f(xk+Δxk)≤f(xk)+αλk.f(x_k+\Delta x_k)\le f(x_k)+\alpha\lambda_k .f(xk+Δxk)≤f(xk)+αλk.

This is the first ingredient of the superlinear convergence proof of Theorem 3.7.

Formalization Note The paper states the hypotheses on ggg in Lemma A.1 (p. 23) as (i) C2C^2C2 and strongly convex, (ii) ∇2g\nabla^2g∇2g Lipschitz; the Lipschitz continuity of ∇g\nabla g∇g is the standing assumption of §3.3 (p. 13) and is included. The same constant mmm bounds ggg's strong convexity and HkH_kHk from below, as printed.

/-- Lemma 3.5 (Lemma A.1), arXiv:1206.1623v13, p. 13 and p. 23. Let `g` be twice
continuously differentiable and strongly convex with constant `m > 0`, with `∇g` and `∇²g`
Lipschitz with constants `L1`, `L2`; let `h` be proper closed convex with domain `D`, and `xstar`
an optimal solution. For every run of Algorithm 1 with `α ∈ (0, 1/2)`, backtracking factor
`β ∈ (0, 1)`, `mI ⪯ H k ⪯ MI` (`0 < m ≤ M`) for all `k`, and `{H k}` satisfying the Dennis–Moré
criterion (3.2) at `xstar`, the unit step length satisfies the sufficient descent condition (2.19)
after sufficiently many iterations. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
