Let K/FK/FK/F be a finite extension of number fields, let vvv be a finite place of FFF, i.e. a nonzero prime ideal of OF\mathcal O_FOF, and let FvF_vFv be the vvv-adic completion of FFF. For each prime www of OK\mathcal O_KOK lying over vvv (written w∣vw \mid vw∣v), let KwK_wKw be the www-adic completion of KKK, regarded as an FvF_vFv-algebra via the continuous extension of F↪K↪KwF \hookrightarrow K \hookrightarrow K_wF↪K↪Kw. Then

∑w∣v[Kw:Fv]  =  [K:F].\sum_{w \mid v} [K_w : F_v] \;=\; [K : F].w∣v∑[Kw:Fv]=[K:F].

This is the fundamental local–global degree identity (equivalently ∑w∣vewfw=[K:F]\sum_{w\mid v} e_w f_w = [K:F]∑w∣vewfw=[K:F] read through the completions). It is what makes local norms of elements coming from FvF_vFv multiply up to the global degree, e.g. ∏w∣vNKw/Fv(a)=a[K:F]\prod_{w\mid v} N_{K_w/F_v}(a) = a^{[K:F]}∏w∣vNKw/Fv(a)=a[K:F] for a∈Fva \in F_va∈Fv.

Formalization Note Mathlib at this revision provides no canonical algebra structure Fv→KwF_v \to K_wFv→Kw. As in Mathlib's own NumberField.HeightOneSpectrum API (the instance Module.Finite Kv Lw in NumberField/Completion/FinitePlace.lean), the statement takes, for each www, an arbitrary FvF_vFv-algebra structure on KwK_wKw that is continuous (ContinuousSMul) and compatible with F→KF \to KF→K (IsScalarTower F F_v K_w). Since FFF is dense in FvF_vFv, such a structure is unique, and it exists (the continuous extension of F↪K↪KwF \hookrightarrow K \hookrightarrow K_wF↪K↪Kw) exactly when w∣vw \mid vw∣v; so the hypotheses just name the canonical embedding. Primes w∣vw \mid vw∣v are the height-one primes www of OK\mathcal O_KOK with w.asIdeal.LiesOver v.asIdeal; there are finitely many, and the finite sum/product is written with finsum/finprod so that no finiteness hypothesis is needed.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
