Let A∈Rn×nA \in \mathbb{R}^{n\times n}A∈Rn×n (n≥1n \ge 1n≥1) be symmetric positive semi-definite, let rD(A)=nmax⁡iAii/trace(A)r_D(A) = n\max_i A_{ii}/\mathrm{trace}(A)rD(A)=nmaxiAii/trace(A), and let 0<ϵ0 < \epsilon0<ϵ and 0<δ<10 < \delta < 10<δ<1. If the number of samples M≥1M \ge 1M≥1 satisfies

M≥12 ϵ−2ln⁡(2/δ) rD2(A),M \ge \frac{1}{2}\,\epsilon^{-2}\ln(2/\delta)\,r_D^2(A),M≥21ϵ−2ln(2/δ)rD2(A),

then the unit vector estimator UMU_MUM is an (ϵ,δ)(\epsilon,\delta)(ϵ,δ)-approximator of trace(A)\mathrm{trace}(A)trace(A):

Pr⁡(∣UM−trace(A)∣≤ϵ trace(A))≥1−δ.\Pr\bigl(|U_M - \mathrm{trace}(A)| \le \epsilon\,\mathrm{trace}(A)\bigr) \ge 1-\delta .Pr(∣UM−trace(A)∣≤ϵtrace(A))≥1−δ.

The bound depends on AAA only through rD(A)r_D(A)rD(A), which is small when the diagonal of AAA is nearly uniform and as large as nnn when the trace sits on one diagonal entry.

Formalization Note The sentence of Theorem 8.2 names no hypothesis on AAA; the section's matrix is that of Definition 3.4 (positive definite), and the proof uses that samples lie in [0,nmax⁡iAii][0, n\max_i A_{ii}][0,nmaxiAii], i.e. Aii≥0A_{ii} \ge 0Aii≥0. The statement is made for positive semi-definite AAA, the weaker hypothesis. No hypothesis trace(A)>0\mathrm{trace}(A) > 0trace(A)>0 is added: for positive semi-definite AAA with trace 000, A=0A = 0A=0 and the claim holds trivially (Lean's rD(0)=0r_D(0) = 0rD(0)=0).

/-- Theorem 8.2 (Avron–Toledo, p. 8:12): for a symmetric positive semi-definite `n × n` matrix `A`

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
