Let nnn jobs have integral processing times pj>0p_j>0pj>0, integral release dates rj≥0r_j\ge0rj≥0 and weights wj>0w_j>0wj>0, indexed in nonincreasing order of wj/pjw_j/p_jwj/pj, and let α=(αk)\boldsymbol\alpha=(\alpha_k)α=(αk) with 0<αk≤10<\alpha_k\le10<αk≤1 for every kkk. Then for every job jjj the completion time of jjj in the (αj)(\alpha_j)(αj)-schedule satisfies

Cjα ≤ tj(αj)+∑k: αk≤ηk(αj)(1+αk−ηk(αj))pk,C^{\boldsymbol\alpha}_j\ \le\ t_j(\alpha_j)+\sum_{k:\ \alpha_k\le\eta_k(\alpha_j)}\bigl(1+\alpha_k-\eta_k(\alpha_j)\bigr)p_k ,Cjα ≤ tj(αj)+k: αk≤ηk(αj)∑(1+αk−ηk(αj))pk,

where tj(αj)t_j(\alpha_j)tj(αj) is the αj\alpha_jαj-point of jjj and ηk(αj)\eta_k(\alpha_j)ηk(αj) the fraction of job kkk processed by time tj(αj)t_j(\alpha_j)tj(αj), both in the LP schedule.

The sum runs over the jobs that precede jjj in the (αj)(\alpha_j)(αj)-schedule; it includes k=jk=jk=j, for which ηj(αj)=αj\eta_j(\alpha_j)=\alpha_jηj(αj)=αj and the term is pjp_jpj. This bound is the deterministic core of all the randomized analyses of the paper.

Formalization Note. The (αj)(\alpha_j)(αj)-schedule is the closed form of list scheduling in lexicographic (α-point, index) order. The paper obtains the corollary from Lemma 3.1 on an auxiliary schedule, the (αj)(\alpha_j)(αj)-Conversion; the corollary is stated directly for the (αj)(\alpha_j)(αj)-schedule, as in the paper.
