Let V⊆RdV\subseteq\mathbb R^dV⊆Rd be nonempty, closed, and convex, with diameter at most DDD. Let ℓ1,…,ℓT\ell_1,\ldots,\ell_Tℓ1,…,ℓT be nonnegative convex losses that are sss-self-bounded on VVV. Start projected online subgradient descent at any x1∈Vx_1\in Vx1∈V; at round ttt use a subgradient gtg_tgt and the adaptive step size ηt=2D/(2∑i=1t∥gi∥22)\eta_t=\sqrt2D/(2\sqrt{\sum_{i=1}^t\|g_i\|_2^2})ηt=2D/(2∑i=1t∥gi∥22), leaving the point unchanged when gt=0g_t=0gt=0. For every competitor u∈Vu\in Vu∈V,

Regret⁡T(u)≤4sD2+2Ds∑t=1Tℓt(u).\operatorname{Regret}_T(u)\le4sD^2+2D\sqrt{s\sum_{t=1}^T\ell_t(u)}.RegretT(u)≤4sD2+2Dst=1∑Tℓt(u).

When a competitor incurs zero loss in every round, this gives a regret bound independent of the horizon. The same statement applies to every admissible subgradient and projection choice.

Formalization Note Losses are real-valued and globally nonnegative. Self-boundedness uses the infimum over the full Euclidean space. The diameter is bounded by DDD rather than defined as an attained maximum; on a nonempty bounded set this lets the theorem use any valid diameter bound. The conditions T≥1T\ge1T≥1 and s≥0s\ge0s≥0 are explicit.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
