Let N≥0N\ge 0N≥0 be an integer and let ζ∈C\zeta\in\mathbb Cζ∈C be a primitive NNN-th root of unity, in the sense that ζN=1\zeta^N=1ζN=1 and NNN divides every k∈Nk\in\mathbb Nk∈N with ζk=1\zeta^k=1ζk=1. Let P=∑a,b≥0pabXaYb∈C[X,Y]P=\sum_{a,b\ge 0}p_{ab}X^aY^b\in\mathbb C[X,Y]P=∑a,b≥0pabXaYb∈C[X,Y] be a polynomial of total degree d=deg⁡P≥2d=\deg P\ge 2d=degP≥2 such that:

  1. PPP is not radial: pab≠0p_{ab}\ne 0pab=0 for some (a,b)(a,b)(a,b) with a≠ba\ne ba=b (equivalently, PPP is not a polynomial in XYXYXY);
  2. for no integer k≥2k\ge 2k≥2 is PPP homogeneous of degree kkk;
  3. PPP is fixed up to sign by the substitution X↦ζXX\mapsto\zeta XX↦ζX, Y↦ζ−1YY\mapsto\zeta^{-1}YY↦ζ−1Y: either P(ζX,ζ−1Y)=P(X,Y)P(\zeta X,\zeta^{-1}Y)=P(X,Y)P(ζX,ζ−1Y)=P(X,Y) or P(ζX,ζ−1Y)=−P(X,Y)P(\zeta X,\zeta^{-1}Y)=-P(X,Y)P(ζX,ζ−1Y)=−P(X,Y).

Then

N≤max⁡{d, 2d−4}.N\le\max\{d,\,2d-4\}.N≤max{d,2d−4}.

This isolates, as a statement about a single polynomial, the coefficient argument behind the rotation bound of Theorem 1, which rests on the weight identity (4) and the radial form (5). The two shapes that the note rules out using irreducibility and the hypothesis that the curve is not a circle, a polynomial in XYXYXY and a homogeneous binary form, appear here as explicit hypotheses.

Formalization Note: primitive roots follow Mathlib's convention, so N=0N=0N=0 is allowed (no positive power of ζ\zetaζ equals 111; for ζ=0\zeta=0ζ=0 the inverse is read as 0−1=00^{-1}=00−1=0). The number 2d−42d-42d−4 is a truncated difference of natural numbers, which is exact here because d≥2d\ge 2d≥2.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
