Let a>0a > 0a>0, β>0\beta > 0β>0, Mm>0M_m > 0Mm>0, Rr>0R_r > 0Rr>0 be as in the model, let u≥0u \ge 0u≥0 and let TTT be any real target. Suppose the number of false failures at effort ρ\rhoρ is X(ρ)∼Uniform(0,2β/ρ)X(\rho) \sim \mathrm{Uniform}(0, 2\beta/\rho)X(ρ)∼Uniform(0,2β/ρ). Then the retailer's expected profit under the target rebate contract (u,T)(u, T)(u,T),

πR(ρ∣T,u)=u EX{[T−X(ρ)]+}−aρ22+Rr β(1−1ρ),\pi_R(\rho \mid T, u) = u\,E_X\{[T - X(\rho)]^+\} - \frac{a\rho^2}{2} + R_r\,\beta\Big(1 - \frac{1}{\rho}\Big),πR(ρ∣T,u)=uEX{[T−X(ρ)]+}−2aρ2+Rrβ(1−ρ1),

is concave in ρ\rhoρ on the effort domain ρ≥1\rho \ge 1ρ≥1.

This is the uniform instance of Proposition 1 that the paper invokes to make the first-order condition (9) sufficient.

Formalization Note The expectation is the true expectation under the uniform law for every ρ\rhoρ, including efforts with 2β/ρ<T2\beta/\rho < T2β/ρ<T, where it no longer equals T2ρ/4βT^2\rho/4\betaT2ρ/4β.
