Let nnn jobs have integral processing times pj>0p_j > 0pj>0, integral release dates rj≥0r_j \ge 0rj≥0 and weights wj>0w_j > 0wj>0, indexed by nonincreasing wj/pjw_j/p_jwj/pj. For every job jjj, the mean busy time of jjj in the LP schedule is the average over α∈(0,1]\alpha \in (0,1]α∈(0,1] of its α\alphaα-points in the LP schedule:

MjLP=∫01tj(α) dα.M^{LP}_j = \int_0^1 t_j(\alpha)\, d\alpha .MjLP=∫01tj(α)dα.

This identity turns bounds on completion times stated in terms of α\alphaα-points into bounds in terms of MjLPM^{LP}_jMjLP, and hence of the LP value.

Formalization Note The integral is the Lebesgue integral over (0,1](0, 1](0,1]. Since MjLP≥rj+pj/2>0M^{LP}_j \ge r_j + p_j/2 > 0MjLP≥rj+pj/2>0, the identity cannot hold through the convention that a non-integrable function has integral 000. The weights and the sortedness are the paper's standing assumptions; the identity itself concerns only the LP schedule.

/-- Eq. (3.1) (Goemans et al. 2002, p. 176): the mean busy time of job `j` in the LP schedule is
the average of its `α`-points, `M^LP_j = ∫_0^1 t_j(α) dα`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
