Let K\mathbb{K}K be a number field with [K:Q]≤2[\mathbb{K}:\mathbb{Q}] \le 2[K:Q]≤2. Then there are an integer n≥1n \ge 1n≥1 and a homomorphism of Q\mathbb{Q}Q-algebras

K⟶Q(ζn),\mathbb{K} \longrightarrow \mathbb{Q}(\zeta_n),K⟶Q(ζn),

where ζn\zeta_nζn denotes a primitive nnn-th root of unity.

In other words, Q\mathbb{Q}Q itself and every quadratic field Q(d)\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt d)Q(d) are (isomorphic to) subfields of cyclotomic fields. This is the case [K:Q]≤2[\mathbb{K}:\mathbb{Q}] \le 2[K:Q]≤2 of the Kronecker–Weber theorem; every field of degree ≤2\le 2≤2 is Galois over Q\mathbb{Q}Q with abelian Galois group, so no Galois hypothesis is needed. Classically it is the statement that square roots of rational numbers lie in cyclotomic fields, the key instance being (−1)(p−1)/2 p∈Q(ζp)\sqrt{(-1)^{(p-1)/2}\,p} \in \mathbb{Q}(\zeta_p)(−1)(p−1)/2p∈Q(ζp) for an odd prime ppp.

Formalization note. Q(ζn)\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_n)Q(ζn) is Mathlib's CyclotomicField n ℚ, and the embedding is an unspecified K →ₐ[ℚ] CyclotomicField n ℚ (automatically injective since K\mathbb{K}K is a field). The hypothesis [K:Q]≤2[\mathbb{K}:\mathbb{Q}] \le 2[K:Q]≤2 is Module.finrank ℚ K ≤ 2; since K\mathbb{K}K is a number field its degree is at least 111.

Rosen, A Classical Introduction to Modern Number Theory, 2nd ed., GTM 84, Chapter 6, Proposition 6.3.2 (the quadratic Gauss sum satisfies g^2 = (-1)^{(p-1)/2} p), whence sqrt(+-p) lies in Q(zeta_p); together with sqrt(-1) = zeta_4 and sqrt(2) = zeta_8 + zeta_8^{-1} this gives the degree-2 case of the Kronecker-Weber theorem (L. C. Washington, Introduction to Cyclotomic Fields, 2nd ed., GTM 83, Theorem 14.1).

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
