Let pt,yt,pk,yk,gk+1∈Rnp_t, y_t, p_k, y_k, g_{k+1} \in \mathbb R^npt,yt,pk,yk,gk+1∈Rn with pt′yt≠0p_t'y_t \ne 0pt′yt=0, and let dk+1=−H^k+1gk+1d_{k+1} = -\hat H_{k+1} g_{k+1}dk+1=−H^k+1gk+1 be the self-scaled two-update direction (H^k\hat H_kH^k from (37), H^k+1\hat H_{k+1}H^k+1 its BFGS update with (pk,yk)(p_k, y_k)(pk,yk)). Assume

  1. pk′gk+1=0p_k' g_{k+1} = 0pk′gk+1=0 (exact search at step kkk);
  2. pt′gk+1=0p_t' g_{k+1} = 0pt′gk+1=0;
  3. yk′pt=0y_k' p_t = 0yk′pt=0 (conjugacy).

Then

dk+1=−pt′ytyt′yt gk+1+yt′gk+1yt′yt pt+yk′gk+1pk′yk pt′ytyt′yt pk.d_{k+1} = -\frac{p_t' y_t}{y_t' y_t}\, g_{k+1} + \frac{y_t' g_{k+1}}{y_t' y_t}\, p_t + \frac{y_k' g_{k+1}}{p_k' y_k}\,\frac{p_t' y_t}{y_t' y_t}\, p_k.dk+1=−yt′ytpt′ytgk+1+yt′ytyt′gk+1pt+pk′ykyk′gk+1yt′ytpt′ytpk.

This is the algebraic core of Shanno's reduction: once the three orthogonalities hold, the self-scaled direction is an explicit combination of gk+1g_{k+1}gk+1, ptp_tpt and pkp_kpk.

Formalization Note Stated for arbitrary vectors. No condition on pk′ykp_k'y_kpk′yk is needed, since both sides use the same quotient.

/-- Shanno, *Conjugate Gradient Methods with Inexact Searches*, Math. Oper. Res. 3(3) (1978), §IV, p. 251 (PDF 8), eq. (43): if `p_k' g_{k+1} = 0`, `p_t' g_{k+1} = 0` and
`y_k' p_t = 0`, the self-scaled two-update direction is
`d_{k+1} = −(p_t'y_t / y_t'y_t) g_{k+1} + (y_t'g_{k+1} / y_t'y_t) p_t
  + (y_k'g_{k+1} / p_k'y_k)(p_t'y_t / y_t'y_t) p_k`.

**Formalization Note.** Stated generically (`g` plays `g_{k+1}`). The three orthogonalities are
hypotheses: exact search at `k`, the fact M4 (`p_t'g_{k+1} = 0`) and the conjugacy `y_k'p_t = 0`.
`p_t ⬝ᵥ y_t ≠ 0` keeps (37) genuine; no condition on `p_k ⬝ᵥ y_k` is needed since both sides
use the same quotient. -/
