Let v1,…,vnv_1,\dots,v_nv1,…,vn be XOS valuations on the items M={1,…,m}M=\{1,\dots,m\}M={1,…,m}, each given by an XOS expression (a nonempty set of additive clauses with nonnegative item values, vi(S)=max⁡kwki(S)v_i(S)=\max_k w^i_k(S)vi(S)=maxkwki(S)). Run the greedy price-update algorithm of §3.3: bidders are processed in order 1,…,n1,\dots,n1,…,n; bidder iii takes its demand SiS_iSi at the current item prices (removing those items from earlier bidders), and the prices of the items of SiS_iSi are set to their values in a maximizing clause for SiS_iSi in viv_ivi. Let A1,…,AnA_1,\dots,A_nA1,…,An be the resulting allocation. Then, for every demand oracle and every XOS oracle used by the algorithm, and for every allocation O1,…,OnO_1,\dots,O_nO1,…,On,

∑i=1nvi(Oi)≤2∑i=1nvi(Ai).\sum_{i=1}^n v_i(O_i)\le 2\sum_{i=1}^n v_i(A_i).i=1∑nvi(Oi)≤2i=1∑nvi(Ai).

In the paper's words, the algorithm provides a 2-approximation to the optimal allocation. It uses only demand queries and XOS queries and, unlike the LP-based algorithms of §3.1–3.2, is combinatorial.

Formalization Note The paper compares with the optimal allocation; the statement quantifies over every allocation, which is equivalent. The oracles are arbitrary functions meeting their specifications, so the guarantee holds for every tie-breaking in the demand and in the choice of maximizing clause. Running time is not modelled.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
