Polynomial-size commutative aggregates cannot be half of a covering pair (Erdős 624)
ProvedErdos624.monoid_factor_common_hole_eventuallyTheorem. Fix . There is such that for all the following holds. Let , let be any finite commutative monoid with , and let , , be arbitrary. Put . Then there are a -set and a point missed by both and on all subsets of .
This covers, for example, any fixed number of sums in , or , products in a ring of size , mixtures of these, and boundedly many elementary symmetric functions, each followed by arbitrary postprocessing. Consequently, a pair of maps covering every -set for all large (which would be needed to refute the two-map common-hole route to Erdős Problem 624) cannot have either map of this polynomial-state commutative form. Context: Erdős Problem 624 asks whether , where is the least such that some () satisfies for all . By an earlier track-amplification result it would suffice to show that, for large , any two maps with have a common hole: a -set and a point missed by both maps on . These results do not settle Problem 624.
Formalization Note. and range over arbitrary finite types in Type.
