limit-circlesturm-liouville

Let (a,b,p,q,r)(a,b,p,q,r)(a,b,p,q,r) be Sturm–Liouville data and λ∈R\lambda\in\mathbb Rλ∈R. If every solution of (τ−λ)u=0(\tau-\lambda)u=0(τ−λ)u=0 is square integrable near aaa, then τ\tauτ is limit circle at aaa in the Wronskian sense of Teschl p. 187: there is v∈D(τ)v\in\mathfrak D(\tau)v∈D(τ) with Wa(v∗,v)=0W_a(v^*,v)=0Wa(v∗,v)=0 and Wa(v,f)≠0W_a(v,f)\neq0Wa(v,f)=0 for some f∈D(τ)f\in\mathfrak D(\tau)f∈D(τ). Similarly at bbb.

Proof idea: take a real fundamental system u1,u2u_1,u_2u1,u2 of (τ−λ)u=0(\tau-\lambda)u=0(τ−λ)u=0 with W(u1,u2)=1W(u_1,u_2)=1W(u1,u2)=1. Modify u1,u2u_1,u_2u1,u2 away from aaa so that they belong to the maximal domain D(τ)\mathfrak D(\tau)D(τ) and vanish near bbb. Then v=u~1v=\tilde u_1v=u~1 is real, so Wa(v∗,v)=0W_a(v^*,v)=0Wa(v∗,v)=0, and Wa(u~1,u~2)=1W_a(\tilde u_1,\tilde u_2)=1Wa(u~1,u~2)=1.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
