Let n≥1n\ge1n≥1 be an integer and let f∈C[x]f\in\mathbb C[x]f∈C[x] be a squarefree polynomial of positive degree. Let R=C[x][Y]/(Yn−f)R=\mathbb C[x][Y]/(Y^n-f)R=C[x][Y]/(Yn−f) be the affine coordinate ring of the Kummer cover yn=f(x)y^n=f(x)yn=f(x) and K=C(x)[Y]/(Yn−f)K=\mathbb C(x)[Y]/(Y^n-f)K=C(x)[Y]/(Yn−f) its function field (a field, as Yn−fY^n-fYn−f is irreducible over C(x)\mathbb C(x)C(x)). Write y∈Ky\in Ky∈K for the class of YYY, so that yn=f(x)y^n=f(x)yn=f(x), and ι ⁣:R→K\iota\colon R\to Kι:R→K for the C[x]\mathbb C[x]C[x]-algebra map sending the class of YYY to yyy.

For each point (a,b)∈C2(a,b)\in\mathbb C^2(a,b)∈C2 of the cover, that is bn=f(a)b^n=f(a)bn=f(a), let ev(a,b) ⁣:R→C\mathrm{ev}_{(a,b)}\colon R\to\mathbb Cev(a,b):R→C be the evaluation x↦ax\mapsto ax↦a, Y↦bY\mapsto bY↦b, and let O(a,b)⊆K\mathcal O_{(a,b)}\subseteq KO(a,b)⊆K be the local ring at (a,b)(a,b)(a,b): the localization of RRR at ker⁡ev(a,b)\ker\mathrm{ev}_{(a,b)}kerev(a,b), viewed inside KKK, that is, the quotients ι(p)/ι(q)\iota(p)/\iota(q)ι(p)/ι(q) with p,q∈Rp,q\in Rp,q∈R and ev(a,b)(q)≠0\mathrm{ev}_{(a,b)}(q)\ne0ev(a,b)(q)=0.

Let g∈Kg\in Kg∈K lie in O(a,b)\mathcal O_{(a,b)}O(a,b) for every point (a,b)(a,b)(a,b) of the cover. Then ggg comes from the coordinate ring:

g∈⋂(a,b)∈C2bn=f(a)O(a,b) ⟹ ∃ r∈R: ι(r)=g.g\in\bigcap_{\substack{(a,b)\in\mathbb C^2\\ b^n=f(a)}}\mathcal O_{(a,b)}\ \Longrightarrow\ \exists\,r\in R:\ \iota(r)=g.g∈(a,b)∈C2bn=f(a)⋂O(a,b) ⟹ ∃r∈R: ι(r)=g.

In the formalization it is applied with n=4n=4n=4 to the quartic x4+y4=2x^4+y^4=2x4+y4=2, written y4=2−x4y^4=2-x^4y4=2−x4, to show that F y3F\,y^3Fy3 comes from the coordinate ring whenever F dxF\,dxFdx is holomorphic; this is a step of the computation of the genus three in Remark 5 of the note.

Formalization Note: the hypotheses n≠0n\ne0n=0, fff squarefree and deg⁡f>0\deg f>0degf>0 are instance arguments (NeZero, Fact). KKK is an RRR-algebra through ι\iotaι, and each O(a,b)\mathcal O_{(a,b)}O(a,b) is an RRR-subalgebra of KKK.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
