The vertical contour integral at the heart of Perron's formula. For a function GGG on C\mathbb{C}C, a real x>0x>0x>0, an abscissa σ\sigmaσ and a height T>0T>0T>0,

perronIntegral⁡(G,x,σ,T)  =  12πi∫σ−iTσ+iTG(s) xss ds.\operatorname{perronIntegral}(G,x,\sigma,T)\;=\;\frac{1}{2\pi i}\int_{\sigma-iT}^{\sigma+iT}G(s)\,\frac{x^{s}}{s}\,ds.perronIntegral(G,x,σ,T)=2πi1∫σ−iTσ+iTG(s)sxsds.

It is written here as an integral in the real variable ttt along the line s=σ+its=\sigma+its=σ+it: with ds=i dtds=i\,dtds=idt the factor iii cancels against the iii in 1/2πi1/2\pi i1/2πi, leaving

12π∫−TTG(σ+it) xσ+itσ+it dt.\frac{1}{2\pi}\int_{-T}^{T}G(\sigma+it)\,\frac{x^{\sigma+it}}{\sigma+it}\,dt.2π1∫−TTG(σ+it)σ+itxσ+itdt.

No hypotheses are imposed on GGG or on the parameters. Where the integrand fails to be interval integrable the Bochner integral is 000 by convention, so any statement about this quantity carries its own analyticity or integrability hypotheses.

Perron's formula says that for σ\sigmaσ to the right of the abscissa of absolute convergence this integral approximates the partial sum ∑n<xa(n)\sum_{n<x}a(n)∑n<xa(n) of the Dirichlet series G(s)=∑n≥1a(n)n−sG(s)=\sum_{n\ge1}a(n)n^{-s}G(s)=∑n≥1a(n)n−s, with an error that decreases in TTT. Moving the line of integration to the left of σ=1\sigma=1σ=1 and collecting the residues released by the shift is what converts a zero-free region for GGG into an asymptotic formula for that partial sum.

# The truncated Perron integral

The vertical contour integral that carries the analytic content of the Perron formula,
`(1 / 2πi) ∫_{σ - iT}^{σ + iT} G(s) x^s / s ds`, parametrised by the real variable
`t` with `s = σ + it`, so that `ds = i dt` and the factor `i` cancels the `i` in `1/2πi`.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
