Let ttt be the type vector with all entries equal to 111, iii an agent, xxx a set of exactly nnn tasks and 0<ϵ<10<\epsilon<10<ϵ<1, and let t^=t(x→i1−ϵ, xˉ→iϵ)\hat t = t(x \xrightarrow{i} 1-\epsilon,\ \bar x \xrightarrow{i} \epsilon)t^=t(xi1−ϵ, xˉiϵ) (agent iii needs time 1−ϵ1-\epsilon1−ϵ for each task of xxx and ϵ\epsilonϵ for every other task; the other agents need time 111 for every task). Then:

  1. every allocation zzz that gives agent iii all tasks of xxx has make-span g(z,t^)≥(1−ϵ) ng(z,\hat t) \ge (1-\epsilon)\,ng(z,t^)≥(1−ϵ)n;
  2. some allocation yyy has make-span g(y,t^)≤1+kϵg(y,\hat t) \le 1 + k\epsilong(y,t^)≤1+kϵ.

Together with Claim 4.11 this yields the ratio (1−ϵ)n/(1+kϵ)(1-\epsilon)n/(1+k\epsilon)(1−ϵ)n/(1+kϵ), which tends to nnn as ϵ→0\epsilon\to 0ϵ→0.

Formalization Note The paper writes g(x(t^),t^)≥∣x1∣≥ng(x(\hat t),\hat t) \ge |x^1| \ge ng(x(t^),t^)≥∣x1∣≥n; since agent 111's tasks in xxx each take 1−ϵ1-\epsilon1−ϵ under t^\hat tt^, the bound that follows is (1−ϵ)∣x1∣≥(1−ϵ)n(1-\epsilon)|x^1| \ge (1-\epsilon)n(1−ϵ)∣x1∣≥(1−ϵ)n, stated here. The set xxx has exactly nnn tasks, the paper's "we can assume w.l.o.g. that ∣x1∣=n|x^1| = n∣x1∣=n"; the second part is the paper's "an optimal allocation would split these tasks among the nnn agents", with the explicit bound 1+kϵ1+k\epsilon1+kϵ.

/-- The ratio step of the proof of Theorem 4.10, p. 180, with the printed bound corrected: let
`t` be the all-ones type vector, `i` an agent, `x` a set of exactly `n` tasks, `0 < ε < 1` and
`t̂ = t(x →ⁱ 1 - ε, x̄ →ⁱ ε)`. Every allocation giving agent `i` all tasks of `x` has make-span
at least `(1 - ε) n` under `t̂`, while some allocation has make-span at most `1 + k ε`. -/
