Let v1,…,vnv_1,\dots,v_nv1,…,vn be valuations on the bundles of M={1,…,m}M=\{1,\dots,m\}M={1,…,m} and let xxx be an optimal solution of the LP relaxation, with value OPT∗=∑i,Sxi,Svi(S)\mathrm{OPT}^*=\sum_{i,S}x_{i,S}v_i(S)OPT∗=∑i,Sxi,Svi(S). Then for every allocation (O1,…,On)(O_1,\dots,O_n)(O1,…,On) (pairwise disjoint bundles),

∑ivi(Oi) ≤ OPT∗.\sum_{i} v_i(O_i)\ \le\ \mathrm{OPT}^*.i∑vi(Oi) ≤ OPT∗.

In particular the optimal fractional value is an upper bound on the value OPT\mathrm{OPT}OPT of the optimal integral allocation.

This is the first link in the chain of the approximation guarantee: the rounding algorithm is compared with OPT∗\mathrm{OPT}^*OPT∗, and this inequality transfers the guarantee to the integral optimum.

Formalization Note No property of the valuations is needed. The paper states this fact without a label in step (i) of the proof of Theorem 3.1 and uses it again for Theorem 3.2.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
