Let α∈(0,1]\alpha\in(0,1]α∈(0,1]. Consider nnn agents with non-decreasing, normalized, submodular valuations v1,…,vnv_1,\dots,v_nv1,…,vn over a set MMM of m=knm=knm=kn goods, and let ≻=(≻1,…,≻n)\succ=(\succ_1,\dots,\succ_n)≻=(≻1,…,≻n) be an α\alphaα-approximate pure Nash equilibrium of the Round-Robin mechanism: every report is a ranking, and no agent can increase its true value by more than a factor 1/α1/\alpha1/α by reporting any other ranking. Then the allocation (A1,…,An)(A_1,\dots,A_n)(A1,…,An) returned by Round-Robin(≻)(\succ)(≻) is α3\tfrac{\alpha}{3}3α-EF1 with respect to the true valuations: for all agents i,ji,ji,j with Aj≠∅A_j\neq\emptysetAj=∅ there is a good g∈Ajg\in A_jg∈Aj with

vi(Ai) ≥ α3⋅vi(Aj∖{g}).v_i(A_i)\ \ge\ \frac{\alpha}{3}\cdot v_i(A_j\setminus\{g\}).vi(Ai) ≥ 3α⋅vi(Aj∖{g}).

Round-Robin run on truthful additive reports is EF1, but agents with submodular valuations have incentives to misreport. The theorem shows that strategic behaviour costs only a constant factor of fairness: every approximate equilibrium remains approximately EF1, measured against the agents' real valuations.

Formalization Note Valuations are real-valued, normalized and non-decreasing (IsValuation) and submodular in the marginal form of p. 5 (IsSubmodular). The equilibrium hypothesis IsApproxPNE α v σ quantifies deviations over rankings only, as Definition 2.4 does; EF1 (IsApproxEF1) uses the true valuations v i, not the reports. α/3\alpha/3α/3 is a real division and α∈(0,1]\alpha\in(0,1]α∈(0,1] is carried as 0 < α, α ≤ 1.

Formalization Note Agents are Fin n with n≥1n\ge1n≥1 (0-based: the paper's agent iii is i - 1), goods a finite type MMM with ∣M∣=m|M| = m∣M∣=m, and the paper's standing simplification m=knm = knm=kn (p. 7) is the hypothesis hm : Fintype.card M = k * n; the paper calls it without loss of generality (dummy goods), and that reduction is not formalized. Steps of Round-Robin are 0-based: the paper's step (r−1)n+i(r-1)n+i(r−1)n+i is step (r-1)*n + (i-1), and the paper's SrS_rSr, Sr′S'_rSr′ (goods allocated in steps 1,…,rn+i−11,\dots,rn+i-11,…,rn+i−1) are allocBefore σ (r*n + i) and allocBefore (Function.update σ i τ) (r*n + i) for the 0-based agent i. A ranking is a duplicate-free list of all goods; the deviating profile (≻i′,≻−i)(\succ'_i,\succ_{-i})(≻i′,≻−i) is Function.update σ i τ.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
