Let G∈Rr×kG\in\mathbb R^{r\times k}G∈Rr×k be a standard Gaussian matrix with k−r≥4k-r\ge4k−r≥4, and let G†=GT(GGT)−1G^{\dagger}=G^{\mathsf T}(GG^{\mathsf T})^{-1}G†=GT(GGT)−1. For every t≥1t\ge1t≥1,

P{∥G†∥F2>12 rk−r⋅t} ≤ 4 t−(k−r)/2.\mathbb P\Bigl\{\|G^{\dagger}\|_F^2>\frac{12\,r}{k-r}\cdot t\Bigr\}\ \le\ 4\,t^{-(k-r)/2}.P{∥G†∥F2>k−r12r⋅t} ≤ 4t−(k−r)/2.

This is the large-deviation bound for the Frobenius norm of a pseudo-inverted Gaussian matrix, which Halko–Martinsson–Tropp introduced (Theorem A.6; stated as Proposition 10.4 eq. (10.5) in the form P{∥G†∥F≥12k/p t}≤4t−p\mathbb P\{\|G^{\dagger}\|_F\ge\sqrt{12k/p}\,t\}\le4t^{-p}P{∥G†∥F≥12k/pt}≤4t−p) to prove deviation bounds for the Frobenius error of the randomized SVD. Unlike the spectral-norm tail, it is proved through the bidiagonal (Householder) model of a Gaussian matrix and chi-square moment estimates.

Formalization Note. The event is {12rk−rt<∥G†∥F2}\{\tfrac{12r}{k-r}t<\|G^{\dagger}\|_F^2\}{k−r12rt<∥G†∥F2} with pinvR as G†G^{\dagger}G†; the exponent −(k−r)/2-(k-r)/2−(k−r)/2 is a real power (rpow) of t≥1t\ge1t≥1.

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-fable-5-1

Throughout, μr,k\mu_{r,k}μr,k denotes the measure called gaussianMatrix r k: the product measure on the function space {0,…,r−1}×{0,…,k−1}→R\{0,\dots,r-1\}\times\{0,\dots,k-1\}\to\mathbb{R}{0,…,r−1}×{0,…,k−1}→R in which every one of the rkrkrk coordinates is an independent standard normal N(0,1)\mathcal N(0,1)N(0,1); it is a probability measure, and a sample GGG is viewed as the real r×kr\times kr×k matrix with entries GijG_{ij}Gij. Matrix inversion (⋅)−1(\cdot)^{-1}(⋅)−1 is Mathlib's total inverse on square real matrices: it is the usual inverse when the determinant is nonzero and is the zero matrix otherwise. For an r×kr\times kr×k matrix GGG, write G†:=G⊤(GG⊤)−1G^{\dagger} := G^{\top}(GG^{\top})^{-1}G†:=G⊤(GG⊤)−1, a k×rk\times rk×r real matrix (the bundle's pinvR; it is the zero matrix when GG⊤GG^{\top}GG⊤ is singular), and ∥A∥F2:=∑i∑jAij2\|A\|_F^2 := \sum_i\sum_j A_{ij}^2∥A∥F2:=∑i∑jAij2 (the bundle's frobSq).

Statement. Let r,kr,kr,k be natural numbers with r+4≤kr+4\le kr+4≤k, and let ttt be a real number with 1≤t1\le t1≤t. The theorem asserts the single inequality of extended non-negative reals

μr,k({ G  :  12 rk−r⋅t  <  ∥G⊤(GG⊤)−1∥F2 })  ≤  ofReal⁡ ⁣(4⋅t−k−r2),\mu_{r,k}\Big(\big\{\,G \;:\; \tfrac{12\,r}{k-r}\cdot t \;<\; \big\|G^{\top}(GG^{\top})^{-1}\big\|_F^{2}\,\big\}\Big)\;\le\;\operatorname{ofReal}\!\Big(4\cdot t^{-\frac{k-r}{2}}\Big),μr,k({G:k−r12r⋅t<G⊤(GG⊤)−1F2})≤ofReal(4⋅t−2k−r),

where r,kr,kr,k are cast to R\mathbb{R}R, the threshold is (12r/(k−r))⋅t\big(12r/(k-r)\big)\cdot t(12r/(k−r))⋅t (the product is left-associated: 12r12 r12r divided by k−rk-rk−r, then multiplied by ttt), the exponent −k−r2-\tfrac{k-r}{2}−2k−r is a real exponent (real power of ttt), and ofReal⁡\operatorname{ofReal}ofReal maps a real to [0,∞][0,\infty][0,∞] (negative inputs map to 000). The set on the left consists of samples whose G†G^{\dagger}G† has squared Frobenius norm strictly greater than the threshold, and μr,k\mu_{r,k}μr,k is applied as an outer measure.

Edge cases. Since k≥r+4k\ge r+4k≥r+4, k−r≥4>0k-r\ge4>0k−r≥4>0, so the division is ordinary and the exponent satisfies −k−r2≤−2-\tfrac{k-r}{2}\le -2−2k−r≤−2; since t≥1>0t\ge1>0t≥1>0, t−(k−r)/2=1/t(k−r)/2t^{-(k-r)/2} = 1/t^{(k-r)/2}t−(k−r)/2=1/t(k−r)/2 is a positive real and 4t−(k−r)/2∈(0,4]4t^{-(k-r)/2}\in(0,4]4t−(k−r)/2∈(0,4], so no clipping by ofReal⁡\operatorname{ofReal}ofReal occurs. Because μr,k\mu_{r,k}μr,k is a probability measure the left side is at most 111, so the claim is automatic whenever 4t−(k−r)/2≥14t^{-(k-r)/2}\ge14t−(k−r)/2≥1, i.e. for 1≤t≤42/(k−r)1\le t\le 4^{2/(k-r)}1≤t≤42/(k−r). When r=0r=0r=0 the threshold is 000 and ∥G†∥F2\|G^{\dagger}\|_F^2∥G†∥F2 is an empty sum equal to 000, so the set is empty and the left side is 000. Nothing is claimed for t<1t<1t<1.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
