Let u∈C∖Q‾u \in \mathbb{C} \setminus \overline{\mathbb{Q}}u∈C∖Q. Let q1,q2∈Q‾[X]q_1, q_2 \in \overline{\mathbb{Q}}[X]q1,q2∈Q[X] be coprime of degree at most 222, one of them of degree exactly 222, so that Λ=Q‾q1+Q‾q2\Lambda = \overline{\mathbb{Q}}q_1 + \overline{\mathbb{Q}}q_2Λ=Qq1+Qq2 is the pencil of quadratics of a Möbius involution τ\tauτ of the uuu-line (its members vanish on the τ\tauτ-orbits). Let l1,l2∈Λl_1, l_2 \in \Lambdal1,l2∈Λ be non-zero, and let WWW be the Q‾\overline{\mathbb{Q}}Q-span of 1,u,u−11, u, u^{-1}1,u,u−1 and of q1(u)iq2(u)3−i/(u l1(u)l2(u))q_1(u)^iq_2(u)^{3-i}/(u\,l_1(u)l_2(u))q1(u)iq2(u)3−i/(ul1(u)l2(u)), i=0,…,3i = 0, \dots, 3i=0,…,3. Suppose also ρ=uuˉ\rho = u\bar uρ=uuˉ is algebraic, and put H0=Q‾+Q‾u+Q‾uˉH_0 = \overline{\mathbb{Q}} + \overline{\mathbb{Q}}u + \overline{\mathbb{Q}}\bar uH0=Q+Qu+Quˉ. Then WWW carries a 2×32 \times 32×3 configuration, but for no w∈Ww \in Ww∈W outside H0H_0H0 does H0+Q‾wH_0 + \overline{\mathbb{Q}}wH0+Qw carry one.

For q1=X2q_1 = X^2q1=X2, q2=1q_2 = 1q2=1 (τ:u↦−u\tau: u \mapsto -uτ:u↦−u) these are the spaces of DiazModulus.circle_point_two_pole_configuration_invisible_to_four_dimensional_extensions and of R5's families. Every 5-dimensional W⊇Q‾+Q‾u+Q‾u−1W \supseteq \overline{\mathbb{Q}} + \overline{\mathbb{Q}}u + \overline{\mathbb{Q}}u^{-1}W⊇Q+Qu+Qu−1 of rational functions of uuu that contains a 4-term geometric progression is either of this form or contains u2u^2u2, u−2u^{-2}u−2 or some 1/(u−a)1/(u - a)1/(u−a); that converse is proved in the research notes and is not formalised.

Proof. The configuration is DiazModulus.involution_pencil_space_carries_two_by_three_configuration. Since uˉ=ρu−1\bar u = \rho u^{-1}uˉ=ρu−1, every H0+Q‾wH_0 + \overline{\mathbb{Q}}wH0+Qw with w∈Ww \in Ww∈W lies in WWW. If one carried a configuration with w∉H0w \notin H_0w∈/H0, Theorem B (DiazModulus.circle_point_extension_two_by_three_configuration_iff) and exchange would put u2u^2u2, uˉ2\bar u^2uˉ2 or 1/(u−b)1/(u - b)1/(u−b) in WWW, and uˉ2∈W\bar u^2 \in Wuˉ2∈W would give u−2=ρ−2uˉ2∈Wu^{-2} = \rho^{-2}\bar u^2 \in Wu−2=ρ−2uˉ2∈W; DiazModulus.involution_pencil_space_excludes_squares_and_reciprocals rules all of them out.

Novelty. Not found in the sources read; it is short (Theorem B plus the exclusions). The progression step is Bachoc–Serra–Zémor (2017, Lemma 4).

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
