Let AAA be a self-adjoint operator on a complex Hilbert space H\mathfrak HH with projection-valued measure PAP_APA, let λ1<λ2\lambda_1 < \lambda_2λ1<λ2, and let ψ1,…,ψk∈D(A)\psi_1, \dots, \psi_k \in \mathfrak D(A)ψ1,…,ψk∈D(A) be linearly independent. If

∥(A−λ2+λ12)ψ∥<λ2−λ12∥ψ∥\Big\| \Big(A - \frac{\lambda_2 + \lambda_1}{2}\Big)\psi \Big\| < \frac{\lambda_2 - \lambda_1}{2} \|\psi\|(A−2λ2+λ1)ψ<2λ2−λ1∥ψ∥

for every nonzero linear combination ψ=∑j=1kcjψj\psi = \sum_{j=1}^k c_j \psi_jψ=∑j=1kcjψj, then

dim⁡Ran⁡PA((λ1,λ2))≥k.\dim \operatorname{Ran} P_A((\lambda_1, \lambda_2)) \ge k .dimRanPA((λ1,λ2))≥k.

Approximate eigenvectors whose residual is small compared with the half-width of the interval thus certify spectral subspace of at least the corresponding dimension inside the interval.

Formalization Note. As in part (i), the projection-valued measure PPP is taken as data with the hypothesis A=∫λ dP(λ)A = \int \lambda\, dP(\lambda)A=∫λdP(λ), so PA=PP_A = PPA=P. The vectors ψj\psi_jψj are elements of A.domain and the linear combinations are formed there. Dimensions are cardinals (Module.rank).

/-- Teschl, Theorem 4.12 (ii), p. 119, (4.35)–(4.36): let `A` be self-adjoint with
projection-valued measure `P` (i.e. `A = ∫ λ dP(λ)`, so `P_A = P`), let `λ₁ < λ₂` and let
`ψ₁, …, ψ_k ∈ 𝔇(A)` be linearly independent. If
`‖(A − (λ₂ + λ₁)/2)ψ‖ < ((λ₂ − λ₁)/2)‖ψ‖` for every nonzero linear combination `ψ` of the `ψ_j`,
then `dim Ran P_A((λ₁, λ₂)) ≥ k`. Dimensions are cardinals (`Module.rank`). -/

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

This theorem is stated for a complex Hilbert space H\mathcal HH. It has the following hypotheses:

  • AAA is a self-adjoint linear operator (Mathlib's sense) with domain D(A)\mathcal D(A)D(A).
  • PPP assigns a bounded operator P(Ω)P(\Omega)P(Ω) on H\mathcal HH to each Ω⊆R\Omega\subseteq\mathbb RΩ⊆R.
  • PPP satisfies the imported predicate IsProjValuedMeasure.
  • PPP, λ↦λ\lambda\mapsto\lambdaλ↦λ and AAA satisfy the imported predicate IsSpectralIntegral. Neither predicate is unfolded, since their bodies are not part of this text.
  • λ1<λ2\lambda_1<\lambda_2λ1<λ2 are real numbers.
  • k∈Nk\in\mathbb Nk∈N, and ψ1,…,ψk∈D(A)\psi_1,\dots,\psi_k\in\mathcal D(A)ψ1,…,ψk∈D(A) are linearly independent over C\mathbb CC as vectors of H\mathcal HH.
  • Let W=span⁡C{ψ1,…,ψk}⊆D(A)W=\operatorname{span}_{\mathbb C}\{\psi_1,\dots,\psi_k\}\subseteq\mathcal D(A)W=spanC{ψ1,…,ψk}⊆D(A). For every nonzero φ∈W\varphi\in Wφ∈W:
∥Aφ−λ1+λ22 φ∥<λ2−λ12 ∥φ∥.\Bigl\|A\varphi - \tfrac{\lambda_1+\lambda_2}{2}\,\varphi\Bigr\| < \tfrac{\lambda_2-\lambda_1}{2}\,\|\varphi\| .Aφ−2λ1+λ2φ<2λ2−λ1∥φ∥.

The conclusion is

k≤dim⁡CRan⁡P((λ1,λ2)),k\le\dim_{\mathbb C}\operatorname{Ran}P\bigl((\lambda_1,\lambda_2)\bigr),k≤dimCRanP((λ1,λ2)),

where the interval is open, Ran⁡\operatorname{Ran}Ran is the range of the operator (no closure taken) and dim⁡\dimdim is the cardinal (Hamel) dimension.

Degenerate cases.

  • k=0k=0k=0. W={0}W=\{0\}W={0}, the norm hypothesis is vacuous, and the conclusion 0≤dim⁡0\le\dim0≤dim is trivial.
  • H={0}\mathcal H=\{0\}H={0}. Linear independence forces k=0k=0k=0.
  • Division by 2. The divisions are real divisions by 222, so no default values arise.
  • Consistency of hypotheses. Whether the hypotheses on PPP and AAA can hold together depends on the imported predicates.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
