Novikov's projection theorem for Borel sets with compact sections. Let XXX be a standard Borel space and let YYY be a separable metrizable space whose Borel σ\sigmaσ-algebra is standard (for instance a Polish space, or a Borel subset of a Polish space with the relative topology). If B⊆X×YB \subseteq X \times YB⊆X×Y is a Borel set such that every section

Bx={ y∈Y:(x,y)∈B }B_x = \{\, y \in Y : (x,y) \in B \,\}Bx={y∈Y:(x,y)∈B}

is compact, then its projection

πX(B)={ x∈X:Bx≠∅ }\pi_X(B) = \{\, x \in X : B_x \neq \emptyset \,\}πX(B)={x∈X:Bx=∅}

is a Borel subset of XXX.

In general the projection of a Borel set is only analytic; compactness of the sections is what makes it Borel. This is the projection half of the Kunugui–Novikov theorem used in Bäuerle–Rieder, Proposition 2.4.11, to show that TnvT_n vTnv is measurable, and (applied to B∩(X×F)B \cap (X \times F)B∩(X×F) for closed FFF) it yields measurable selectors of compact-valued correspondences.

Formalization note. Kechris states the theorem for Polish YYY. The version here, for separable metrizable YYY with standard Borel σ\sigmaσ-algebra, follows from it: such a YYY is a Borel subset of its completion Y^\widehat YY (Lusin–Souslin), so BBB is Borel in X×Y^X \times \widehat YX×Y, and its sections stay compact in Y^\widehat YY.

/-- Novikov's projection theorem for Borel sets with compact sections (Kechris, *Classical
Descriptive Set Theory*, Theorem 28.8; Bertsekas–Shreve / Bäuerle–Rieder cite it as the
Kunugui–Novikov theorem): if `X` is a standard Borel space, `Y` is a separable metrizable space
whose Borel σ-algebra is standard, and `B ⊆ X × Y` is a Borel set every section
`B_x = {y | (x, y) ∈ B}` of which is compact, then the projection `π_X(B)` is Borel. -/

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
