Let g:Rn→Rg:\mathbb R^n\to\mathbb Rg:Rn→R be twice continuously differentiable and strongly convex with constant m>0m>0m>0, with ∇g\nabla g∇g Lipschitz continuous with constant L1L_1L1. Let hhh be a proper closed convex function with domain DDD, and let x⋆x^\starx⋆ be an optimal solution of min⁡f=g+h\min f=g+hminf=g+h. Fix α∈(0,12)\alpha\in(0,\tfrac12)α∈(0,21) and a backtracking factor β∈(0,1)\beta\in(0,1)β∈(0,1), and let M≥mM\ge mM≥m. Let (xk,Hk,Δxk,tk)(x_k,H_k,\Delta x_k,t_k)(xk,Hk,Δxk,tk) be a run of Algorithm 1 from any x0∈Dx_0\in Dx0∈D in which the subproblems (2.9) are solved exactly and

mI⪯Hk⪯MIfor all k.mI\preceq H_k\preceq MI\quad\text{for all }k.mI⪯Hk⪯MIfor all k.

Then xk→x⋆x_k\to x^\starxk→x⋆.

This is the global convergence result on which the local analysis of the proximal Newton and proximal quasi-Newton methods rests.

Formalization Note Required repair. As printed (only Hk⪰mIH_k\succeq mIHk⪰mI, fff closed convex with attained infimum) the theorem is false: take n=1n=1n=1, g(x)=x2/2g(x)=x^2/2g(x)=x2/2, h=0h=0h=0, m=1m=1m=1 and Hk=2k+1H_k=2^{k+1}Hk=2k+1; then Δxk=−xk/2k+1\Delta x_k=-x_k/2^{k+1}Δxk=−xk/2k+1, the unit step satisfies (2.19) for every α∈(0,12)\alpha\in(0,\tfrac12)α∈(0,21), and xk→x0∏j≥1(1−2−j)≈0.289 x0≠0=x⋆x_k\to x_0\prod_{j\ge1}(1-2^{-j})\approx0.289\,x_0\ne0=x^\starxk→x0∏j≥1(1−2−j)≈0.289x0=0=x⋆. The statement is therefore made in the setting of §3.3 (strongly convex ggg, mI⪯Hk⪯MImI\preceq H_k\preceq MImI⪯Hk⪯MI), where the minimizer is unique and the conclusion is convergence to it.

/-- Theorem 3.1 (in the setting of §3.3), arXiv:1206.1623v13, p. 10. **Repaired statement.**
Let `g` be twice continuously differentiable and strongly convex with constant `m > 0`, with `∇g`
Lipschitz with constant `L1`; let `h` be proper closed convex with domain `D`, and `xstar` an
optimal solution of (1.1). Let `(x, H, Δ, t)` be a run of Algorithm 1 with `α ∈ (0, 1/2)` and
backtracking factor `β ∈ (0, 1)` (subproblems solved exactly), with `mI ⪯ H k ⪯ MI` for all `k`,
`0 < m ≤ M`. Then `x k → xstar` from any `x 0 ∈ D`. As printed, without the upper bound
`H k ⪯ MI`, the theorem is false (n = 1, g x = x²/2, h = 0, m = 1, H k = 2^(k+1): the unit step
is accepted and the iterates converge to about 0.289 · x 0 ≠ 0). -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
