Let K/FK/FK/F be a finite extension of number fields, and let ppp be a prime. If the global unit groups of FFF and KKK have equal Dirichlet ranks, then their Leopoldt defects agree:

rank⁡ZE(F)=rank⁡ZE(K)⟹DL(F)=DL(K).\operatorname{rank}_{\mathbb Z}E(F)=\operatorname{rank}_{\mathbb Z}E(K) \quad\Longrightarrow\quad \mathcal D_L(F)=\mathcal D_L(K).rankZE(F)=rankZE(K)⟹DL(F)=DL(K).

The result applies, in particular, to the quadratic extension of a totally real field by a CM field when their unit ranks agree. It provides an extension principle without requiring that the field be CM.

Formalization Note The equality follows by combining the mission’s established monotonicity of defects in finite extensions with its upper bound by the increase in unit rank.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
