This statement gives a coordinate chain rule for a composition with a gradient map.

Let n∈Nn\in\mathbb Nn∈N and let u,f:Rn→Ru,f:\mathbb R^n\to\mathbb Ru,f:Rn→R be C1C^1C1. At a point y∈Rny\in\mathbb R^ny∈Rn, assume that ∇u∇u∇u is differentiable at yyy. For every coordinate i∈Fin⁡(n)i\in\operatorname{Fin}(n)i∈Fin(n),

Dei(f∘∇u)(y)=∑j(∇2u(y))ij (∇f(∇u(y)))j.D_{e_i}(f\circ∇u)(y) = \sum_j (\nabla^2u(y))_{ij}\,(\nabla f(\nabla u(y)))_j.Dei(f∘∇u)(y)=j∑(∇2u(y))ij(∇f(∇u(y)))j.

Here hessianMatrix u y is the matrix used for the weak Hessian coordinates. The result is a finite-dimensional pointwise identity and makes no global invertibility claim about ∇u∇u∇u.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
