Consider one stage ttt of the Bellman equations (2) under the Type 2 ambiguity set (10): a stage feasible set S=Xt(xt−1,ξt)S=X_t(x_{t-1},\xi_t)S=Xt(xt−1,ξt) of pairs (xt,yt)(x_t,y_t)(xt,yt) with binary state xt∈{0,1}Ix_t\in\{0,1\}^Ixt∈{0,1}I, a stage cost gtg_tgt, a finite support {ξt+1k}k=1K⊂RJ\{\xi^k_{t+1}\}_{k=1}^K\subset\mathbb R^J{ξt+1k}k=1K⊂RJ, next-stage values Qt+1k(xt)Q^k_{t+1}(x_t)Qt+1k(xt), and a decision-dependent mean μ(xt)\mu(x_t)μ(xt) and covariance Σ(xt)\Sigma(x_t)Σ(xt). Suppose that for every feasible xtx_txt (every xtx_txt with some yty_tyt such that (xt,yt)∈S(x_t,y_t)\in S(xt,yt)∈S) the ambiguity set Pt+1D2(xt)\mathcal P^{D_2}_{t+1}(x_t)Pt+1D2(xt) is nonempty. Then for every real qqq,

q=min⁡(xt,yt)∈S{gt(xt,yt)+max⁡p∈Pt+1D2(xt)∑k=1KpkQt+1k(xt)}q=\min_{(x_t,y_t)\in S}\Big\{g_t(x_t,y_t)+\max_{p\in\mathcal P^{D_2}_{t+1}(x_t)}\sum_{k=1}^Kp_kQ^k_{t+1}(x_t)\Big\}q=(xt,yt)∈Smin{gt(xt,yt)+p∈Pt+1D2(xt)maxk=1∑KpkQt+1k(xt)}

holds (with both the minimum and the inner maxima attained) if and only if qqq is the attained minimum of

min⁡xt,yt,s,u,Y gt(xt,yt)+s+u⊤μ(xt)+Σ(xt)∙Y(11a)s.t.  s+u⊤ξt+1k+(ξt+1k−μ(xt))(ξt+1k−μ(xt))⊤∙Y≥Qt+1k(xt),  ∀k∈[K],(11b)(xt,yt)∈S,\begin{aligned} \min_{x_t,y_t,s,u,Y}\ & g_t(x_t,y_t)+s+u^\top\mu(x_t)+\Sigma(x_t)\bullet Y &&\text{(11a)}\\ \text{s.t. }\ & s+u^\top\xi^k_{t+1}+(\xi^k_{t+1}-\mu(x_t))(\xi^k_{t+1}-\mu(x_t))^\top\bullet Y\ge Q^k_{t+1}(x_t),\ \ \forall k\in[K], &&\text{(11b)}\\ & (x_t,y_t)\in S, \end{aligned}xt,yt,s,u,Ymin s.t.  gt(xt,yt)+s+u⊤μ(xt)+Σ(xt)∙Ys+u⊤ξt+1k+(ξt+1k−μ(xt))(ξt+1k−μ(xt))⊤∙Y≥Qt+1k(xt),  ∀k∈[K],(xt,yt)∈S,(11a)(11b)

where s∈Rs\in\mathbb Rs∈R, u∈RJu\in\mathbb R^Ju∈RJ, Y∈RJ×JY\in\mathbb R^{J\times J}Y∈RJ×J and A∙B=trace⁡(A⊤B)A\bullet B=\operatorname{trace}(A^\top B)A∙B=trace(A⊤B).

In words: the min–max Bellman equation of stage ttt can be rewritten as one minimization in which the worst-case expectation is replaced by its LP dual. Under the affine maps (12) and McCormick envelopes for the binary state this becomes the mixed-integer linear program that the paper's SDDiP algorithm solves.

Formalization Note The theorem holds for arbitrary SSS and gtg_tgt, so the page's standing assumptions that gtg_tgt is linear and XtX_tXt is a nonempty compact mixed-integer polyhedron are not imposed (a disclosed generalization); the binary state is kept as the hypothesis hbin, which the statement does not need. The next-stage values are an arbitrary function of the state and the scenario. The ambiguity set includes p≥0p\ge0p≥0 ((C-18e) of the proof; (10) as printed omits it). The equality "Qt=Q_t=Qt= (11)" is stated as: qqq is the least stage value if and only if qqq is the least value of (11), so both the existence of the minima and their equality are asserted.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
