Let EEE be a finite-dimensional real normed space and F:E→EF:E\to EF:E→E continuously differentiable. Assume that Algorithm GIN with parameter t∈(0,1)t\in(0,1)t∈(0,1) does not break down, producing iterates xkx_kxk and levels ηk∈[0,1)\eta_k\in[0,1)ηk∈[0,1) such that sk=xk+1−xks_k=x_{k+1}-x_ksk=xk+1−xk satisfies (2.1) and (2.2). If

∑k≥0(1−ηk)=∞,\sum_{k\ge0}(1-\eta_k)=\infty,k≥0∑(1−ηk)=∞,

then F(xk)→0F(x_k)\to0F(xk)→0. If, in addition, x∗x_*x∗ is a limit point of (xk)(x_k)(xk) such that F′(x∗)F'(x_*)F′(x∗) is invertible, then F(x∗)=0F(x_*)=0F(x∗)=0 and xk→x∗x_k\to x_*xk→x∗.

This is the basic global convergence theorem for the framework: every later algorithm (MR, TL, INB, ENB) is shown to be a special case of GIN, and its convergence result is derived from this theorem and Theorem 3.5.

Formalization Note The terms 1−ηk1-\eta_k1−ηk are positive, so divergence of the series is stated as "not summable". "Does not break down" is the run predicate IsGINRun. A limit point is MapClusterPt.

/-- Eisenstat–Walker (1994), p. 400, Theorem 3.4 (global convergence of Algorithm GIN): assume
Algorithm GIN does not break down. If `∑_{k ≥ 0} (1 - η_k)` is divergent, then `F(x_k) → 0`. If, in
addition, `x_*` is a limit point of `{x_k}` with `F'(x_*)` invertible, then `F(x_*) = 0` and
`x_k → x_*`. The terms `1 - η_k` are positive, so divergence is `¬ Summable`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
