Let nnn jobs have integral processing times pj>0p_j > 0pj>0, integral release dates rj≥0r_j \ge 0rj≥0 and weights wj≥0w_j \ge 0wj≥0, and let the horizon T∈NT \in \mathbb NT∈N bound the makespan of some feasible nonpreemptive schedule. Then the preemptive time-indexed relaxation (D) has an optimal solution with integral entries: there is a feasible y∗y^*y∗ with

yjτ∗∈{0,1}for all j and τy^*_{j\tau} \in \{0, 1\} \quad \text{for all } j \text{ and } \tauyjτ∗∈{0,1}for all j and τ

such that ∑jwjCj(y∗)≤∑jwjCj(y)\sum_j w_j C_j(y^*) \le \sum_j w_j C_j(y)∑jwjCj(y∗)≤∑jwjCj(y) for every feasible yyy, where Cj(⋅)C_j(\cdot)Cj(⋅) is given by (2.1).

The lemma reflects that, after eliminating CjC_jCj with (2.1), (D) is a transportation problem. It is the starting point of the interchange argument for Theorem 2.2.

Formalization Note Optimality is stated directly (the solution attains the minimum over all feasible yyy), not through the value ZDZ_DZD. The paper's standing assumption is wj>0w_j > 0wj>0; the statement is made for wj≥0w_j \ge 0wj≥0.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
