Let III be a finite index set, let pi>0p_i>0pi>0 for i∈Ii\in Ii∈I, and let D=diag⁡(log⁡pi)i∈ID=\operatorname{diag}(\log p_i)_{i\in I}D=diag(logpi)i∈I. For every Hermitian matrix Z∈CI×IZ\in\mathbb{C}^{I\times I}Z∈CI×I,

Re⁡Tr⁡[(∫01e(1−s)D Z esD ds)Z]=∑i∈I∑j∈IL(pi,pj) ∣Zij∣2,\operatorname{Re}\operatorname{Tr}\Bigl[\Bigl(\int_0^1 e^{(1-s)D}\,Z\,e^{sD}\,ds\Bigr)Z\Bigr]=\sum_{i\in I}\sum_{j\in I}L(p_i,p_j)\,|Z_{ij}|^2 ,ReTr[(∫01e(1−s)DZesDds)Z]=i∈I∑j∈I∑L(pi,pj)∣Zij∣2,

where L(a,b)=b−alog⁡b−log⁡aL(a,b)=\frac{b-a}{\log b-\log a}L(a,b)=logb−logab−a for a≠ba\neq ba=b and L(a,a)=aL(a,a)=aL(a,a)=a is the logarithmic mean.

The integral ∫01e(1−s)DZesDds\int_0^1e^{(1-s)D}Ze^{sD}ds∫01e(1−s)DZesDds is the Duhamel (Fréchet) derivative of the matrix exponential at DDD in direction ZZZ, so the left side is the second-order term of Tr⁡eD+tZ\operatorname{Tr}e^{D+tZ}TreD+tZ at ρ=eD=diag⁡(p)\rho=e^{D}=\operatorname{diag}(p)ρ=eD=diag(p). The identity shows that this Hessian is the Bogoliubov–Kubo–Mori quadratic form ∑i,jL(pi,pj)∣Zij∣2\sum_{i,j}L(p_i,p_j)|Z_{ij}|^2∑i,jL(pi,pj)∣Zij∣2.

Formalization Note The integral is a Bochner interval integral in the matrix space, e(⋅)e^{(\cdot)}e(⋅) is NormedSpace.exp, and Re⁡Tr⁡\operatorname{Re}\operatorname{Tr}ReTr is the real-linear functional matrixReTrace.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
