Let Q≥1Q\ge 1Q≥1 and M,N≥0M,N\ge 0M,N≥0 be integers, and let an∈Ca_n\in\mathbb Can∈C for M≤n<M+NM\le n<M+NM≤n<M+N. Assume every nnn with an≠0a_n\ne0an=0 has all of its prime factors larger than QQQ, so the coefficients live on integers coprime to every modulus q≤Qq\le Qq≤Q. Then

∑r≤Q ∑m≤Q/r(m,r)=1, m squarefreerφ(r) φ(m) (N+16 rmQ) ∑χ mod r ∗∣∑M≤n<M+Nan χ(n)∣2 ≤ ∑M≤n<M+N∣an∣2,\sum_{r\le Q}\ \sum_{\substack{m\le Q/r\\ (m,r)=1,\ m\ \text{squarefree}}} \frac{r}{\varphi(r)\,\varphi(m)\,\bigl(N+16\,rmQ\bigr)}\ \sum_{\chi \bmod r}^{\ *}\Bigl|\sum_{M\le n<M+N} a_n\,\chi(n)\Bigr|^2\ \le\ \sum_{M\le n<M+N}|a_n|^2,r≤Q∑ m≤Q/r(m,r)=1, m squarefree∑φ(r)φ(m)(N+16rmQ)r χmodr∑ ∗M≤n<M+N∑anχ(n)2 ≤ M≤n<M+N∑∣an∣2,

where ∑∗\sum^*∑∗ runs over the primitive Dirichlet characters modulo rrr (for r=1r=1r=1, the trivial character).

This is the weighted multiplicative large sieve in the form Riesel and Vaughan use in their treatment of Schnirelmann's constant: their (8.17) combined with the Gauss-sum decomposition that leads to (8.18). Here the Montgomery–Vaughan constant 3/23/23/2 is replaced by 161616. The inner sum over mmm is the sieve gain: by MVSieve.large_sieve_weight_lower it is about log⁡(Q/r)/N\log(Q/r)/Nlog(Q/r)/N when N≥16Q2N\ge16Q^2N≥16Q2. Applied to the indicator of primes in an interval, it bounds the non-principal character sums of primes on average over moduli.

Formalization note: rrr ranges over Finset.Icc 1 Q in ℕ+; mmm over Finset.Icc 1 Q filtered by rm≤Qrm\le Qrm≤Q, Nat.Coprime r m, Squarefree m; primitivity is written χ.conductor = r; χ(n)\chi(n)χ(n) is χ\chiχ applied to the image of nnn in ZMod r.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
