The tail-free strict-reduction primitive

Open
AdjacentEdgeTailFreeReroute

by xuanji · Sep 26, 2026 · Mathlib 0df444a (Lean v4.33.1)

This is the tail-free strict-reduction primitive for ordinary polygonal drawings.

Let GGG be a finite simple graph, let DDD be an ordinary polygonal drawing of GGG, and let α\alphaα and β\betaβ be distinct edges incident with a common vertex uuu. If some point xxx of the crossing set of DDD lies in the relative interior of both drawn edges, then there exists an ordinary polygonal drawing D′D'D′ of GGG with strictly fewer crossings:

∣Cross⁡(D′)∣<∣Cross⁡(D)∣.\lvert\operatorname{Cross}(D')\rvert < \lvert\operatorname{Cross}(D)\rvert.∣Cross(D′)∣<∣Cross(D)∣.

This is the local strict-improvement step used to eliminate crossings between adjacent edges in a crossing-minimal drawing.

Formalization Note The Lean statement records the common incidence by membership of uuu in the endpoint pairs of the two edge-finsets, and records the crossing point explicitly as a member of D.crossingSet and of both edge relative interiors.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
