This is the Davis–Kahan sin⁡Θ\sin\ThetasinΘ theorem in the Frobenius-norm form of Yu, Wang and Samworth, for the leading eigenspace.

Let Σ,Σ^∈Rn×n\Sigma, \hat\Sigma \in \mathbb R^{n\times n}Σ,Σ^∈Rn×n be symmetric. Let U∈Rn×rU \in \mathbb R^{n \times r}U∈Rn×r have orthonormal columns that are eigenvectors of Σ\SigmaΣ, ΣU=U Diag(λ1,…,λr)\Sigma U = U\,\mathrm{Diag}(\lambda_1,\dots,\lambda_r)ΣU=UDiag(λ1,…,λr), and suppose there is an eigengap g>0g > 0g>0 below them: for every vvv orthogonal to the columns of UUU and every kkk,

v⊤Σv≤(λk−g) v⊤v,v^\top \Sigma v \le (\lambda_k - g)\, v^\top v,v⊤Σv≤(λk−g)v⊤v,

i.e. λr(Σ)−λr+1(Σ)≥g\lambda_r(\Sigma) - \lambda_{r+1}(\Sigma) \ge gλr(Σ)−λr+1(Σ)≥g (in particular the λk\lambda_kλk are the rrr largest eigenvalues). Let U^∈Rn×r\hat U \in \mathbb R^{n\times r}U^∈Rn×r consist of orthonormal top-rrr eigenvectors of Σ^\hat\SigmaΣ^. Then there is an orthogonal matrix O^∈Rr×r\hat O \in \mathbb R^{r\times r}O^∈Rr×r with

∥U−U^O^∥F≤23/2 ∥Σ^−Σ∥Fg.\|U - \hat U \hat O\|_F \le \frac{2^{3/2}\,\|\hat\Sigma - \Sigma\|_F}{g}.∥U−U^O^∥F≤g23/2∥Σ^−Σ∥F.

In the proof of Theorem 2 this bounds the distance between the top eigenvectors of the estimated clustering matrix X^\hat XX^ and those of the true clustering matrix X0X^0X0, step (i) of (G.6).

Formalization Note The paper states the theorem for eigenvectors s,…,rs, \dots, rs,…,r with gap min⁡(λs−1−λs,λr−λr+1)\min(\lambda_{s-1}-\lambda_s, \lambda_r - \lambda_{r+1})min(λs−1−λs,λr−λr+1); this item is the case s=1s = 1s=1 (where λ0=∞\lambda_0 = \inftyλ0=∞), the only case the paper uses. Any ggg with 0<g≤λr−λr+10 < g \le \lambda_r - \lambda_{r+1}0<g≤λr−λr+1 is allowed; taking ggg equal to the gap gives (G.5). When r=nr = nr=n the complement is {0}\{0\}{0} and the gap hypothesis is vacuous, as λn+1=−∞\lambda_{n+1} = -\inftyλn+1=−∞ on the page.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
