Let AAA be a real number with A≤1/3+1/130A\le 1/3+1/130A≤1/3+1/130. Then there is a threshold NNN such that the following holds for every n≥Nn\ge Nn≥N. Let p=(p1,…,pn)p=(p_1,\dots,p_n)p=(p1,…,pn) be an injective configuration of nnn points in the plane whose image P={p1,…,pn}P=\{p_1,\dots,p_n\}P={p1,…,pn} has no three collinear points and no four points on a common circle, and let D(P)D(P)D(P) be the number of distinct distances between distinct points of PPP. Then

D(P)>A n.D(P)>A\,n .D(P)>An.

The threshold may depend on AAA, and the conclusion holds for every qualifying configuration of size nnn. This is the eventual, fixed-coefficient form of the bound D(P)>(1/3+1/130)nD(P)>(1/3+1/130)nD(P)>(1/3+1/130)n for n≥10000n\ge 10000n≥10000. Erdős Problem 98 asks for this conclusion for every real A>0A>0A>0; the statement here covers the coefficients A≤1/3+1/130A\le 1/3+1/130A≤1/3+1/130 only.

Formalization Note The threshold is expressed with Filter.atTop on the natural numbers, and D(P)D(P)D(P) is NumDistances p.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
