Let (R4,ta,hab)(\mathbb{R}^4, t_a, h^{ab})(R4,ta,hab) be equipped with the standard absolute time ta=dx0t_a = \mathrm{d}x^0ta=dx0 and flat spatial metric hab=diag(0,1,1,1)h^{ab} = \mathrm{diag}(0,1,1,1)hab=diag(0,1,1,1), and let ∇\nabla∇ be a torsion-free derivative operator compatible with both metrics (a classical Newton–Cartan connection).

Then, in this global chart, the Christoffel symbols of ∇\nabla∇ satisfy

Γ0bc=0,Γijk=0(i,j,k∈{1,2,3}),Γi0j+Γj0i=0.\Gamma^0{}_{bc} = 0,\qquad \Gamma^i{}_{jk} = 0 \quad (i,j,k \in \{1,2,3\}),\qquad \Gamma^i{}_{0j} + \Gamma^j{}_{0i} = 0.Γ0bc=0,Γijk=0(i,j,k∈{1,2,3}),Γi0j+Γj0i=0.

Thus the only possibly nonzero symbols are the gravitational field Γi00\Gamma^i{}_{00}Γi00 and the antisymmetric Coriolis field Ωij=Γi0j\Omega^i{}_j = \Gamma^i{}_{0j}Ωij=Γi0j.

This is the standard reduction of a classical connection on Newtonian spacetime in inertial spatial coordinates; it is the starting point for Trautman recovery.

Formalization Note. IsClassical packages IsDerivOp (smooth + torsion-free) and Compatible with the fixed tt and hh of Def_NewtonCartan_defs.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
