Let ppp be a prime and let F⊆K\mathbb{F} \subseteq \mathbb{K}F⊆K be number fields, n=[K:F]n = [\mathbb{K} : \mathbb{F}]n=[K:F]. For a number field L\mathbb{L}L write Up(L)=∏℘∣pO℘×U_p(\mathbb{L}) = \prod_{\wp \mid p} \mathcal{O}_\wp^\timesUp(L)=∏℘∣pO℘× for the semilocal units at ppp (product topology) and ιL:E(L)=O(L)×→Up(L)\iota_{\mathbb{L}} : E(\mathbb{L}) = \mathcal{O}(\mathbb{L})^\times \to U_p(\mathbb{L})ιL:E(L)=O(L)×→Up(L) for the diagonal embedding of the global units, as in Section 1.1 of the source.

Then there are continuous group homomorphisms

φ:Up(F)⟶Up(K),N:Up(K)⟶Up(F)\varphi : U_p(\mathbb{F}) \longrightarrow U_p(\mathbb{K}), \qquad N : U_p(\mathbb{K}) \longrightarrow U_p(\mathbb{F})φ:Up(F)⟶Up(K),N:Up(K)⟶Up(F)

such that

  1. φ\varphiφ is injective and compatible with the inclusion of global units: φ(ιF(ε))=ιK(ε)\varphi(\iota_{\mathbb{F}}(\varepsilon)) = \iota_{\mathbb{K}}(\varepsilon)φ(ιF(ε))=ιK(ε) for every ε∈E(F)\varepsilon \in E(\mathbb{F})ε∈E(F);
  2. NNN extends the global norm: N(ιK(ε))=ιF(NK/F(ε))N(\iota_{\mathbb{K}}(\varepsilon)) = \iota_{\mathbb{F}}\bigl(N_{\mathbb{K}/\mathbb{F}}(\varepsilon)\bigr)N(ιK(ε))=ιF(NK/F(ε)) for every ε∈E(K)\varepsilon \in E(\mathbb{K})ε∈E(K);
  3. N∘φN \circ \varphiN∘φ is the nnn-th power map:
N(φ(x))=x[K:F]for all x∈Up(F).N(\varphi(x)) = x^{[\mathbb{K}:\mathbb{F}]} \qquad \text{for all } x \in U_p(\mathbb{F}).N(φ(x))=x[K:F]for all x∈Up(F).

Concretely, φ\varphiφ is the semilocal inclusion (on the factor at P∣p\mathfrak{P} \mid pP∣p of K\mathbb{K}K it is the continuous embedding F℘↪KP\mathbb{F}_\wp \hookrightarrow \mathbb{K}_\mathfrak{P}F℘↪KP applied to the component at ℘=P∩O(F)\wp = \mathfrak{P} \cap \mathcal{O}(\mathbb{F})℘=P∩O(F)), and NNN is the semilocal norm, whose component at ℘\wp℘ is

N(y)℘=∏P∣℘NKP/F℘(yP).N(y)_\wp = \prod_{\mathfrak{P} \mid \wp} N_{\mathbb{K}_\mathfrak{P}/\mathbb{F}_\wp}(y_\mathfrak{P}).N(y)℘=P∣℘∏NKP/F℘(yP).

Property 2 is the local–global norm identity NK/F=∏P∣℘NKP/F℘N_{\mathbb{K}/\mathbb{F}} = \prod_{\mathfrak{P}\mid\wp} N_{\mathbb{K}_\mathfrak{P}/\mathbb{F}_\wp}NK/F=∏P∣℘NKP/F℘ coming from F℘⊗FK≅∏P∣℘KP\mathbb{F}_\wp \otimes_{\mathbb{F}} \mathbb{K} \cong \prod_{\mathfrak{P} \mid \wp} \mathbb{K}_\mathfrak{P}F℘⊗FK≅∏P∣℘KP, and property 3 is the degree formula ∑P∣℘[KP:F℘]=[K:F]\sum_{\mathfrak{P} \mid \wp} [\mathbb{K}_\mathfrak{P} : \mathbb{F}_\wp] = [\mathbb{K} : \mathbb{F}]∑P∣℘[KP:F℘]=[K:F] (Neukirch, ANT II.8). This is the "norm" side of Remark 1.A of the source: together with φ\varphiφ it lets one pass relations between ppp-adic closures of units up and down the extension, since N∘φN \circ \varphiN∘φ is multiplication by [K:F][\mathbb{K}:\mathbb{F}][K:F] on the Zp\mathbb{Z}_pZp-module Up(F)U_p(\mathbb{F})Up(F).

Formalization Note The fields are related by an Algebra F K instance (finiteness of K/F\mathbb{K}/\mathbb{F}K/F is automatic for number fields). SemilocalUnits p L and diagonalUnits p L are from the definition file. The global norm on units is Units.map (RingOfIntegers.norm F), where NumberField.RingOfIntegers.norm F : 𝓞 K →* 𝓞 F is Mathlib's restriction of Algebra.norm F to rings of integers; the inclusion of units is Units.map of algebraMap (𝓞 F) (𝓞 K). The two maps are bundled in one existential so that property 3 refers to the same φ\varphiφ as property 1.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
