Let φ\varphiφ be a prize allocation rule satisfying order preservation, winner strict endowment monotonicity and endowment continuity, let (N,R)(N,\mathcal R)(N,R) be a ranked set of competitors, and let w∈Nw\in Nw∈N be the winner, R(w)=1\mathcal R(w)=1R(w)=1. Then the map E↦φw(N,R,E)E\mapsto\varphi_w(N,\mathcal R,E)E↦φw(N,R,E) on R+\mathbb R_+R+ is

  1. strictly increasing,
  2. continuous,
  3. unbounded above,

and consequently

∀x≥0∃! E≥0: φw(N,R,E)=x.\forall x\ge 0\quad \exists!\,E\ge 0:\ \varphi_w(N,\mathcal R,E)=x.∀x≥0∃!E≥0: φw(N,R,E)=x.

This inversion is what lets the proof of Theorem 3 parametrize every competition with n+1n+1n+1 competitors by the winner's prize xxx.

Formalization Note Endowment continuity is a hypothesis here, as in the sentence of the proof; in the paper it follows from endowment monotonicity by Lemma 1, which is formalized in a companion mission of this series. The standing hypotheses on UUU are not used and are omitted.

/-- Proof of Theorem 3, pp. 32–33: the winner's prize `E ↦ φ_1(N, R, E)` is an unbounded,
continuous, increasing function of `E ∈ ℝ₊`, so each `x ≥ 0` is the winner's prize for a
unique `E ≥ 0`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
