Let XXX be a compact topological space and let AAA be a linear operator on C(X)C(X)C(X) (with the supremum norm), given by its graph G⊆C(X)×C(X)G\subseteq C(X)\times C(X)G⊆C(X)×C(X), a linear subspace. Assume:

  1. Positive maximum principle: whenever (f,g)∈G(f,g)\in G(f,g)∈G and x∈Xx\in Xx∈X satisfy f(x)=sup⁡yf(y)≥0f(x)=\sup_y f(y)\ge 0f(x)=supyf(y)≥0, then g(x)≤0g(x)\le 0g(x)≤0;

  2. Dense domain: D(A)={f:(f,g)∈G}\mathcal D(A)=\{f : (f,g)\in G\}D(A)={f:(f,g)∈G} is dense in C(X)C(X)C(X);

  3. Range condition: for some r>0r>0r>0 the range {rf−g:(f,g)∈G}\{rf-g : (f,g)\in G\}{rf−g:(f,g)∈G} of r−Ar-Ar−A is dense in C(X)C(X)C(X);

  4. (1,0)(1,0)(1,0) lies in the closure G‾\overline{G}G of the graph.

Then there is a strongly continuous contraction semigroup (T(t))t≥0(T(t))_{t\ge0}(T(t))t≥0 on C(X)C(X)C(X) which is positive (f≥0⇒T(t)f≥0f\ge 0\Rightarrow T(t)f\ge 0f≥0⇒T(t)f≥0), conservative (T(t)1=1T(t)1=1T(t)1=1), and whose infinitesimal generator is exactly G‾\overline{G}G: for all f,g∈C(X)f,g\in C(X)f,g∈C(X),

lim⁡t↓0T(t)f−ft=g  ⟺  (f,g)∈G‾.\lim_{t\downarrow 0}\frac{T(t)f-f}{t}=g \iff (f,g)\in\overline{G}.t↓0limtT(t)f−f=g⟺(f,g)∈G.

This is the Hille–Yosida theorem for Feller semigroups in the compact case, together with the standard conservativity remark.

Formal statement
/-- Ethier–Kurtz, Chapter 4, Theorem 2.2 (compact state space), together with the
conservativity statement: a linear operator on `C(X)` with dense domain satisfying
the positive maximum principle, for which `r - A` has dense range for some `r > 0`,
has a closure that generates a positive strongly continuous contraction semigroup;
if `(1, 0)` lies in the closure, the semigroup is conservative. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
