Let FFF be a subfield of C\mathbb{C}C and u∈Cu \in \mathbb{C}u∈C transcendental over FFF with uuˉ∈Fu\bar u \in Fuuˉ∈F. Let a,b,c∈Fa, b, c \in Fa,b,c∈F with b≠0b \neq 0b=0 or c≠0c \neq 0c=0. Then a+bu+cuˉa + bu + c\bar ua+bu+cuˉ is transcendental over FFF.

Proof. Put e=a+bu+cuˉe = a + bu + c\bar ue=a+bu+cuˉ and ρ=uuˉ\rho = u\bar uρ=uuˉ, which is non-zero as u≠0u \neq 0u=0. Multiplying by uuu gives bu2+(a−e)u+cρ=0bu^2 + (a - e)u + c\rho = 0bu2+(a−e)u+cρ=0, so uuu is a root of bX2+(a−e)X+cρbX^2 + (a - e)X + c\rhobX2+(a−e)X+cρ, a polynomial over the intermediate field F(e)F(e)F(e) that is non-zero because b≠0b \neq 0b=0 or cρ≠0c\rho \neq 0cρ=0. If eee were algebraic over FFF, then F(e)F(e)F(e) would be algebraic over FFF, and uuu, algebraic over F(e)F(e)F(e), would be algebraic over FFF, a contradiction.

Novelty. A standard fact of field theory; routine.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
