Theorem. Let ∣U∣=n≥1|U|=n\ge1∣U∣=n≥1, r,k≥0r,k\ge0r,k≥0 with n≤r(k+1)n\le r(k+1)n≤r(k+1). Then there are maps g0,…,gr−1:P(U)→Ug_0,\dots,g_{r-1}:\mathcal P(U)\to Ug0,…,gr−1:P(U)→U such that for every kkk-set Y⊆UY\subseteq UY⊆U,

⋃i<r{gi(A):A⊆Y}=U.\bigcup_{i<r}\{g_i(A):A\subseteq Y\}=U.i<r⋃{gi(A):A⊆Y}=U.

The maps depend only on ∣A∣|A|∣A∣ (each point of UUU is assigned a slot (i,ℓ)(i,\ell)(i,ℓ) and gi(A)g_i(A)gi(A) is the point in slot (i,∣A∣)(i,|A|)(i,∣A∣)). In the context of Erdős Problem 624, this shows that a family of rrr maps need have no common omitted point on any kkk-set once n≤r(k+1)n\le r(k+1)n≤r(k+1), so any common-hole lemma for several maps needs kkk large compared with n/rn/rn/r.

Formalization Note. U=Fin nU=\mathrm{Fin}\,nU=Finn, maps indexed by Fin r\mathrm{Fin}\,rFinr.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
