Let III be an instance of the one-dimensional bin-packing problem, with OPT(I)OPT(I)OPT(I) the minimum number of bins in a packing of III and SIZE(I)SIZE(I)SIZE(I) the total size of its pieces. Then

OPT(I)≤2 SIZE(I)+1.OPT(I) \le 2\,SIZE(I) + 1 .OPT(I)≤2SIZE(I)+1.

This crude bound is used to pack the residual instance in the rounding argument of Lemma 2 and Corollary 1.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
