Let n>0n>0n>0, let CCC be any real n×nn\times nn×n cost matrix, and let uuu be the histogram with entries 1/n1/n1/n. There is a permutation σ⋆\sigma^\starσ⋆ such that its scaled permutation coupling is optimal among all couplings in U(u,u)U(u,u)U(u,u), and σ⋆\sigma^\starσ⋆ minimizes the assignment objective among all permutations:

Pσ⋆∈U(u,u),⟨C,Pσ⋆⟩≤⟨C,Q⟩(∀Q∈U(u,u)),AC(σ⋆)≤AC(τ)(∀τ∈Perm⁡(n)).P_{\sigma^\star}\in U(u,u),\qquad \langle C,P_{\sigma^\star}\rangle\le\langle C,Q\rangle\quad(\forall Q\in U(u,u)),\qquad A_C(\sigma^\star)\le A_C(\tau)\quad(\forall\tau\in\operatorname{Perm}(n)).Pσ⋆∈U(u,u),⟨C,Pσ⋆⟩≤⟨C,Q⟩(∀Q∈U(u,u)),AC(σ⋆)≤AC(τ)(∀τ∈Perm(n)).

Consequently, the Kantorovich relaxation of the uniform optimal assignment problem is tight.

Formalization Note The condition n>0n>0n>0 excludes the empty index set and division by zero. The cost is allowed to be negative; the book imposes no sign restriction on CCC for this result. The minimization over couplings ranges over every feasible matrix, not only permutation matrices.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
