number-theoryp-adicunits

Let ppp be prime and KKK a number field. Write rrr for the Dirichlet rank of the unit group, and Eˉ\bar EEˉ for the closure of its diagonal image in the semilocal units at ppp. Then Leopoldt’s conjecture is equivalent to equality of ranks:

DL(K)=0⟺rank⁡Zp(Eˉ)=r.\mathcal D_L(K)=0\quad\Longleftrightarrow\quad \operatorname{rank}_{\mathbb Z_p}(\bar E)=r.DL(K)=0⟺rankZp(Eˉ)=r.

The mission’s bounded rank operation zpRankBelow measures the ppp-adic rank of Eˉ\bar EEˉ using continuous embeddings of finite free Zp\mathbb Z_pZp modules, with the field degree as bound. The established upper bound ensures that defect zero forces equality, while equality immediately gives defect zero. This equivalence is a reusable interface between the defect formulation and a concrete rank goal.

Formalization Note The defect is natural-number subtraction; the rank upper bound is essential to the forward implication.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
