There is one finite program for the unit-cost real RAM of WilliamsonShmoys_PlanarIndependentSetRAM and constants C,d>0C,d>0C,d>0 with the following property. For every integer k≥1k\ge1k≥1, every nnn, every adjacency table on {0,…,n−1}\{0,\dots,n-1\}{0,…,n−1} with graph GGG and every real weight vector www, if for each 0≤j<k0\le j<k0≤j<k the graph obtained by deleting the vertices whose BFS level (bakerLevel) is ≡j(modk)\equiv j \pmod k≡j(modk) has tree-width at most 3k3k3k, then the program, started on the standard input layout with accuracy parameter kkk, reaches a halt instruction after ttt steps with

t+1≤C 2dk(n+1)2,t+1 \le C\,2^{dk}(n+1)^2,t+1≤C2dk(n+1)2,

its output bitmap consists of 0/10/10/1 cells and describes an independent set AAA of GGG, and AAA weighs at least as much as every independent set that avoids one residue class of levels:

∑v∈Sw(v)≤∑v∈Aw(v)for all j<k and independent S with ℓ(v)≢j (mod k) for v∈S.\sum_{v\in S} w(v) \le \sum_{v\in A} w(v) \quad\text{for all } j<k \text{ and independent } S \text{ with } \ell(v)\not\equiv j \ (\mathrm{mod}\ k) \text{ for } v\in S.v∈S∑w(v)≤v∈A∑w(v)for all j<k and independent S with ℓ(v)≡j (mod k) for v∈S.

This is the algorithmic half of Baker's PTAS (Williamson–Shmoys, Theorem 10.11): compute the BFS levels, and for each shift jjj solve maximum-weight independent set exactly on the bounded-tree-width graph GjG_jGj (find a tree decomposition of width O(k)O(k)O(k), then dynamic programming), finally output the heaviest of the kkk solutions. The hypothesis is purely combinatorial; planarity is not assumed.

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
