Let q∈Δnq\in\Delta_nq∈Δn with q(j)>0q(j)>0q(j)>0 for all jjj, let β>0\beta>0β>0 and v∈Rnv\in\mathbb R^nv∈Rn. Let P={p∈Δn:D(p∥q)≤β}\mathcal P=\{p\in\Delta_n : D(p\|q)\le\beta\}P={p∈Δn:D(p∥q)≤β}.

  1. The quantity max⁡i(−log⁡qi)\max_i(-\log q_i)maxi(−logqi) is the maximum of the relative entropy over the simplex:
max⁡p∈ΔnD(p∥q)=max⁡i(−log⁡qi),\max_{p\in\Delta_n} D(p\|q) = \max_i(-\log q_i),p∈ΔnmaxD(p∥q)=imax(−logqi),

and the maximum is attained. 2. If β≥max⁡i(−log⁡qi)\beta\ge\max_i(-\log q_i)β≥maxi(−logqi), then P=Δn\mathcal P=\Delta_nP=Δn and the worst-case value of pTvp^{\mathsf T}vpTv over P\mathcal PP is

max⁡p∈PpTv=vmax⁡:=max⁡jv(j),\max_{p\in\mathcal P} p^{\mathsf T}v = v_{\max} := \max_j v(j),p∈PmaxpTv=vmax:=jmaxv(j),

again attained.

This identifies the regime in which the entropy constraint is inactive and the robust inner problem ignores the nominal distribution qqq.

Formalization Note Both maxima are stated with IsGreatest (the value lies in the image and bounds it from above); max⁡i(−log⁡qi)\max_i(-\log q_i)maxi(−logqi) is the indexed supremum ⨆ i, -Real.log (q i) over the finite index set.

/-- §6.1 (Nilim–El Ghaoui 2005, p. 791). Let `q ∈ Δₙ` with `q > 0` and `β > 0`.
(a) `maxᵢ (−log qᵢ)` is the maximum of `p ↦ D(p‖q)` over the simplex `Δₙ` (attained).
(b) If `β ≥ maxᵢ (−log qᵢ)`, the entropy set `𝒫 = {p ∈ Δₙ : D(p‖q) ≤ β}` is the whole simplex, and
the worst-case value of `pᵀv` over `𝒫` is `v_max = maxⱼ v(j)` (attained). -/

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

Setting. Let n∈Nn \in \mathbb{N}n∈N, let q,v∈Rnq, v \in \mathbb{R}^nq,v∈Rn and let β∈R\beta \in \mathbb{R}β∈R. Assume:

  • q∈Δnq \in \Delta_nq∈Δn, where Δn={p:pj≥0, ∑jpj=1}\Delta_n = \{p : p_j \ge 0,\ \sum_j p_j = 1\}Δn={p:pj≥0, ∑jpj=1} is the probability simplex;
  • qj>0q_j > 0qj>0 for every jjj;
  • β>0\beta > 0β>0.

Notation.

  • The divergence is D(p ∥ q)=∑jpjlog⁡(pj/qj)D(p\,\|\,q) = \sum_j p_j \log(p_j/q_j)D(p∥q)=∑jpjlog(pj/qj), with the convention that a term with pj=0p_j = 0pj=0 contributes 000. Since qj>0q_j > 0qj>0, no other convention is involved for p∈Δnp \in \Delta_np∈Δn.
  • The set B(q,β)={p∈Δn:D(p ∥ q)≤β}\mathcal{B}(q,\beta) = \{p \in \Delta_n : D(p\,\|\,q) \le \beta\}B(q,β)={p∈Δn:D(p∥q)≤β}.
  • vmax⁡=max⁡jvjv_{\max} = \max_j v_jvmax=maxjvj, the supremum of the coordinates of vvv.
  • M=sup⁡i(−log⁡qi)M = \sup_i(-\log q_i)M=supi(−logqi). Since every qi>0q_i > 0qi>0, this is the largest of the real numbers −log⁡qi-\log q_i−logqi.

Conclusion (a). MMM is the greatest element of the set of values {D(p ∥ q):p∈Δn}\{D(p\,\|\,q) : p \in \Delta_n\}{D(p∥q):p∈Δn}. That is:

  • D(p ∥ q)≤MD(p\,\|\,q) \le MD(p∥q)≤M for every p∈Δnp \in \Delta_np∈Δn;
  • some p∈Δnp \in \Delta_np∈Δn has D(p ∥ q)=MD(p\,\|\,q) = MD(p∥q)=M.

Conclusion (b). If M≤βM \le \betaM≤β, then both of the following hold:

  • B(q,β)=Δn\mathcal{B}(q,\beta) = \Delta_nB(q,β)=Δn, as sets;
  • vmax⁡v_{\max}vmax is the greatest element of {∑jpjvj:p∈B(q,β)}\{\sum_j p_j v_j : p \in \mathcal{B}(q,\beta)\}{∑jpjvj:p∈B(q,β)}, meaning:
∑jpjvj≤vmax⁡  for all p∈B(q,β),and  ∑jpjvj=vmax⁡  for some p∈B(q,β).\sum_j p_j v_j \le v_{\max}\ \text{ for all } p \in \mathcal{B}(q,\beta), \qquad \text{and } \ \sum_j p_j v_j = v_{\max} \ \text{ for some } p \in \mathcal{B}(q,\beta).j∑pjvj≤vmax  for all p∈B(q,β),and  j∑pjvj=vmax  for some p∈B(q,β).

The vector vvv is arbitrary. The hypothesis β>0\beta > 0β>0 is assumed throughout, including in part (a), where β\betaβ does not appear.

Degenerate cases.

  • n=0n = 0n=0: impossible, since q∈Δnq \in \Delta_nq∈Δn requires ∑jqj=1\sum_j q_j = 1∑jqj=1. So vmax⁡v_{\max}vmax and MMM are genuine maxima.
  • n=1n = 1n=1:
    • q=(1)q = (1)q=(1), M=−log⁡1=0M = -\log 1 = 0M=−log1=0, and Δ1={(1)}\Delta_1 = \{(1)\}Δ1={(1)} with D=0D = 0D=0 there.
    • Part (a) says 000 is the greatest value of DDD.
    • Since β>0≥M\beta > 0 \ge Mβ>0≥M, part (b) always applies: the set is {(1)}\{(1)\}{(1)} and the greatest value of ∑jpjvj\sum_j p_j v_j∑jpjvj is v1=vmax⁡v_1 = v_{\max}v1=vmax.
  • qqq uniform: every qi=1/nq_i = 1/nqi=1/n, so M=log⁡nM = \log nM=logn.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
